Notebook
The open-source computational canvas for STEM
What it does
Notebook is an open-source, local-first infinite canvas built for STEM. Write LaTeX, draw physics and engineering diagrams, plot functions, create charts and tables, annotate PDFs, and export your work: all in one workspace. Built withNET, Next.js, TypeScript, SQLite, Konva and MathJax. The vision: evolve it into a computational canvas where scientific simulations and AI/ML models can run alongside your notes.
**Figma for engineers and STEM students.** A local-first, single-user drawing + file-management app: sketch system architectures, project blueprints, abstract concepts — and drop in **beautiful LaTeX math formulas** right alongside your diagrams. Every file is a canvas; everything is autosaved to a local database as you work. - CommonCapital/Notebook
An engineer's notebook — a drafting table for STEM. Sketch system architectures and blueprints, annotate PDFs, plot functions, and drop in publication-quality LaTeX math, physics, and chemistry right next to your diagrams. Local-first and open source: every file is an infinite canvas that autosaves to a database on your own machine. Status: working prototype. Single-user, local-first, no accounts. See CONTRIBUTING.md for the roadmap (executable Jupyter-style kernels, smart connectors, 2D chemistry structures, auto-layout figures, and C++ physics simulations). Word/Excel export is intentionally omitted — a freeform canvas doesn't map onto their document models. Use PDF, PPTX, or an image…from github.com

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
