Open Rewind – POC for audio and screen and video streaming to S3
Got into a rabbit hole today. POC works using 'npx efficient-recorder'. Is this useful to anyone?
Open Rewind – POC for audio and screen and video streaming to S3 launched on January 4, 2025 with 78 votes, #413 of 6,141 launches that month and more than 95% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 1 year on.
In plain words
Open Rewind is a proof-of-concept tool that captures audio, screen, and video streams and sends them to Amazon S3 storage. Built using the efficient-recorder command-line utility, it enables users to record their screen and audio activity for cloud storage. The tool is designed for developers and users who need to archive multimedia recordings, though the creator is still exploring whether it addresses a genuine need in the workflow automation or documentation space.

Rem: Remember Everything (open source)2023 · github.com · ▲555An open source approach to locally record everything you view on your Apple Silicon computer. Note: Relies on Apple Silicon, and configured to only produce Apple Silicon builds. I think the idea of recording everything you see has the potential to change how we interact with our computers, and believe it should be open source. Also, from a privacy / security perspective, this is like... pretty scary stuff, and I want the code open so we know for certain that nothing is leaving your laptop. Even logging to Sentry has the potential to leak private info.

I realized that the PDF engines of modern desktop browsers (PDFium and PDF.js) support JavaScript with enough I/O primitives to make a basic game like Tetris. It was a bit tricky to find a union of features that work in both engines, but in the end it turns out that showing/hiding annotation "fields" works well to make monochrome pixels, and keyboard input can be achieved by typing in a text input box. All in all it's quite janky but a nice reminder of how general purpose PDF scripting can be. The linked PDF is all ASCII so you can just open it in a text editor, or have a look at…

21st.dev▲1,211I originally built this app to organize and reuse interesting React + Tailwind components I came across on Twitter, inspired by the shadcn/ui approach. Later, a friend started contributing their own components, and it got me thinking—this could grow into something bigger, like an NPM for design engineers to share and use components. Would love to hear your thoughts!
