In plain words
Outperforming VByte for Large Integers Using Phi-Encoding is a GitHub-hosted project that presents an alternative encoding method for compressing large integers. The software demonstrates how phi-encoding can achieve better compression ratios than the commonly used VByte variable-length encoding technique. It is designed for developers and researchers working with data compression, integer storage optimization, and performance-critical applications requiring efficient integer representation.

A hash array-mapped trie implementation in C2023 · github.com · ▲171Long-simmering side project that is finally ready to see the light. HAMTs are a cool persistent data structure and implementing one has been a lot of fun. Beyond the code, there is likely some value in the extensive and largely complete implementation docs; basic benchmarks are linked in the README, too. Kind of aiming to be "the libavl for HAMTs". That is obviously a high and aspirational bar but a distinct possibility if it stirs up a little interest and/or contribution. Anyways, it's time for this to go out, collect feedback and maybe even some use outside of toy projects. Let me…
Integer Map Data Structure2024 · github.com · ▲91This project presents a new data structure for storing ordered integer maps. The proposed data structure is a compressive, cache-friendly, radix tree that has performance comparable to an unordered map (`std::unordered_map`) and is an order of magnitude faster than an ordered map (`std::map`).
- OAOverfitted a 900KB Transformer to Compress a 100MB CSV into 7MBJun 2026 · ▲112
I built an experiment that uses an overfitted transformer and arithmetic coding to compress individual files. Instead of training the model to generalize, I train a 900KB transformer to memorize a single file and predict the next byte. Those predictions are fed into an arithmetic coder to produce the compressed output. On a 100MB NYC taxi CSV, it compresses to about 7MB (~0.5 bits/byte). On a 100MB slice of enwik9, it compresses to about 21MB (~1.68 bits/byte). It's pretty slow right now (roughly 20–30 minutes of training and 45 minutes each for compression and decompression on my…
LoopMix128 – Fast C PRNG (.46ns), 2^128 Period, BigCrush/PractRand Pass2025 · github.com · ▲76LoopMix128 is a fast C PRNG I wrote for non-cryptographic tasks. GitHub (MIT): https://github.com/danielcota/LoopMix128 Highlights: * ~0.37 ns/value (GCC 11.4, -O3 -march=native), 98% faster than xoroshiro128++ and PCG64. * Passes TestU01 BigCrush & PractRand (32TB). * Guaranteed 2^128 period. * Proven injective (192-bit state) via Z3 SMT solver; allows parallel streams. * Core requires only stdint.h. Seeking feedback on design, use cases, or further testing.

Hey there HN! We’re Joe and Stopa, and today we’re open sourcing InstantDB, a client-side database that makes it easy to build real-time and collaborative apps like Notion and Figma. Building modern apps these days involves a lot of schleps. For a basic CRUD app you need to spin up servers, wire up endpoints, integrate auth, add permissions, and then marshal data from the backend to the frontend and back again. If you want to deliver a buttery smooth user experience, you’ll need to add optimistic updates and rollbacks. We do these steps over and over for every feature we build, which can…
