OwnHour

Calm app and site blocking for Android

What it does

OwnHour is a calm Android app and site blocker. Set schedules, limits and protected rules for apps, websites, keywords, adult content and short-form feeds, with privacy-first accountability and no shame-driven streaks.

Block apps, sites and keywords. Protect your focus and get your hours back. OwnHour holds the limits you set, with accountability that fits how much help you want.

OwnHour blocks the apps and sites that pull you away, holds your limits when willpower dips, and hands the hour back to you. Calm by design — no streaks, no shaming, no guesswork. Set it once on a clear-headed morning. It keeps working at 11pm, when the pull is strongest. Apps, sites, whole domains, single keywords and adult content. YouTube Safe Search stays on, whether or not anyone is watching. Give an app twenty minutes a day. Close the feeds after ten. Keep mornings clear until you’ve had coffee. Gentle when you want a nudge you can step past. Strict when you mean it — the session ends when the clock says so. Every blocked moment tells you three things: what happened, whose rule it…from ownhour.app

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

  • I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
