PicoTorrent 0.10 released – WebSocket API included launched on April 28, 2016 with 38 votes, #1,667 of 4,301 launches that month and more than 90% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 10 years on.

In plain words

PicoTorrent 0.10 is a lightweight, customizable BitTorrent client designed for developers and users who want a simple torrent solution. The latest release adds a WebSocket API that lets developers build remote clients to monitor torrents in real-time, though currently read-only. It features a cross-platform core for improved code validation and requires the Visual C++ 2015 runtime to run on Windows.

From the sources

A month in the works, this release of PicoTorrent brings a whole lot to the table. Most notably the WebSocket API which allows developers to write remote clients to monitor PicoTorrent. The API is read-only for now, which means you cannot pause/resume/add/remove torrents, just observe. Other features includes a cross-platform core, which is always nice to have. This means we get warnings and validation from another compiler, in this case GCC. ℹ️ To run the portable version of PicoTorrent v0.10, you will need the Visual C++ 2015 runtimefrom github.com

    DriftDB – an open source WebSocket backend for real-time apps2023 · driftdb.com · ▲367

Hey HN! I’ve written a bunch of WebSocket servers over the years to do simple things like state synchronization, WebRTC signaling, and notifying a client when a backend job was run. I realized that if I had a simple way to create a private, temporary, mini-redis that the client could talk to directly, it would save a lot of time. So we created DriftDB. In addition to the open source server that you can run yourself, we also provide https://jamsocket.live where you can use an instance we host on Cloudflare’s edge (~13ms round trip latency from my home in NY). You may have seen my…

I find existing BitTorrent clients offer a rather old user interface, and it's hard to set up remote access, involving setting up a web server, a TLS certificate, domain name, configuring the router, etc... PikaTorrent tries to offer a modern and easy UI. It is available on desktop (Linux & Windows for now), mobile (Android for now), as CLI as an npm package, and even on the web (as a frontend for remote control). Thanks to WebRTC, one can link the mobile or web app with the desktop or CLI app. This way, it's possible to remotely manage torrents securely and without any complicated setup.…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
