What it does

Getting through your WWDC video backlog is a challenging experience that I set out to make a lot more comfortable this year. Introducing Pipvid: it adds a picture-in-picture mode to VLC and QuickTime, snapping its player windows to any corner of any screen.

Pipvid added a picture-in-picture mode to VLC and QuickTime. Ideal for watching videos in the corner of your screen while working other stuff.

I missed the feature in VLC and decided to ‘bolt it on’ the popular video app. You could add a keyboard shortcut to toggle PiP-mode off and on with the press of a button. Besides the keyboard shortcut, you could pull VLC and QuickTime in and out of Picture-in-Picture mode by resizing their player window. This means you could use VLC and QuickTime like normal when the window takes up a bigger part of the screen and then automatically switch into picture-in-picture mode when you shrink the window down. Eventually attention dropped, probably in favor of apps like IINA which support PiP out of thefrom dangercove.com

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
