Pixel Chain

A pixel editor where SHA-256 decides your colors

What it does

Pixel Chain is a pixel-art editor with one rule: from the second cell on, a color is legal only if SHA-256 of everything you've painted plus that color ends in enough trailing zero bits. Level 1 needs 11, level 10 needs 20 — each level roughly halves what survives. Every stroke sweeps all 16,777,216 RGB values and hands you the nearest color the chain will accept. The seed is only width, height and level, so the same piece rebuilds the same chain on anyone's phone.

They are computed — and the chain decides what you may place next. Pixel Chain is a small-canvas pixel editor where you do not choose colors freely. You choose from what the chain allows. HOW IT WORKS Every pixel you place is appended to a chain. From the second pixel on, a color is legal only when the SHA-256 of every color placed so far, plus that candidate color, ends in a run of zero bits. The number of zero bits is the level you pick when you create the canvas. Your palette swatches almost never pass that test, so…from apps.apple.com

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

  • I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
