PixelHUD - Gamify your Mac
Gamify your Mac with Minecraft-inspired mobs, hearts and XP
What it does
PixelHUD is a free macOS desktop app that brings Minecraft-inspired feedback to everyday tasks. Your battery becomes hearts, typing and clicking earn XP, and focus sessions power a Pomodoro hunger bar. Mobs, sounds, imported skins, and pixel-art effects make your desktop feel more alive. Unlike a traditional productivity tool, PixelHUD turns routine Mac activity into a lightweight game that lives directly on your desktop.
PixelHUD is a free macOS desktop app that turns battery, typing, clicking and focus sessions into hearts, XP, sounds and playful pixel-art effects.
PixelHUD turns the ordinary signals of your day—battery, typing, focus and finished tasks—into the hearts, XP and tiny victories you never really grew out of. Every keystroke and click earns XP. New levels unlock music discs for your jukebox—bringing that Minecraft nostalgia back into your workday. When your Mac is running out of power, PixelHUD turns low battery into a full-screen death screen. PixelHUD's landscape lives behind your windows—sun, clouds, hills, trees and wandering creatures shifting from daylight into night. Your friends tab shows the people in your PixelHUD world, their level and XP—with live activity used to show who is around now. A simple slider in PixelHUD's menu…from pixelhud.eliaspfeffer.de

I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
