Playing Piano with Prime Numbers

Hi HN, I was already building a breakout game[1] just for fun, but then I thought—what if the bricks were news? So now, every time you smash a brick, you get a post and have to decide: read it or toss it. The idea came from realizing I skim through news way too fast, often skipping things that don’t immediately interest me. This was my way of slowing down and giving those overlooked posts a fighting chance. Give it a try! I also wrote a short post [2], detailing the physics behind the game. I spent quite a bit of time just fine-tuning the bounce logic: adjusting angles and adding random…

What it does

Explore how prime numbers can create music. Generate primes, map them to MIDI notes, and make a mini piano. A fun blend of math and sound.

Click Generate to create prime numbers, then click the Play icon to hear them. Mirror: Reflects primes around middle C, alternating above and below. Harmonic: Turns each prime into a chord (root + major 3rd + 5th). Spiral: Walks upward through the keyboard cyclically, like a spiral. Factors: Number of prime factors determines chord size andfrom nabraj.com

In the maker’s words, at launch

I decided to turn prime numbers into a mini piano and see what kind of music they could make. Inspired by: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44888548 Github: https://github.com/neberej/prime-piano

    I made a puzzle game that gently introduces my favorite math mysteries2024 · rahulilango.com · ▲1,054

This is the first iteration of a short game I’m making that tries to interactively explain some of my favorite math questions / ideas. My goal is mostly to get the player curious and not necessarily to explain absolutely everything. There were a lot of fun technical parts to building this: - For implementation reasons, it’s much easier if the lines all have integer intersection points with each other. To do this, when a new line is added I “cheat” by rounding intersections to integers and then splitting the old lines at the intersection into new linds (with potentially different slopes)…

Hey, maker here. After launching a daily word search game, I randomly thought of this math game while driving. Finally got around to making it and I think it turned out pretty cool. It’s a math search game that’s meant to help you practice your quick addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills. I’m hoping it’ll help people (even those like me who aren’t big on math) learn and increase their speeds. (There are also some settings you can enable to make the game harder) If you try it out, please let me know if you found it fun, if you have anything you’d like me to add, or if you…

“Lend Me Your Ears” is an interactive web-based game inspired by the classic Simon toy (originally by Milton Bradley). It presents players with a sequence of musical notes and challenges them to reproduce the sequence using either an on-screen piano or a connected MIDI keyboard. Each correct response leads to a progressively more difficult sequence, testing the player’s concentration, memory, and pitch recognition. The game features two modes: - Simon Mode (focuses on auditory recall) - Practice Mode (displays standard sheet music notation to support learning) The game also includes options…

  • I created a game to memorize the fretboard2023 · fretboardfly.com · ▲258

Hey guys I've been playing the guitar for many years but I felt like I had hit a wall and wasnt making progress. One of the things I realized was holding me back was unfamiliarity with the fretboard. I'd often find myself in situations like “Uhh…Where’s the C# here?” “Where’s the flat-3rd of this root on the 4th string?” “Sure would be nice to know the closest min7 triad shape to play over here..” I tried memorizing the fretboard the obvious way but it extreeemly boring for me. Being a developer, I decided to turn it into a game. I'd love for you guys to try it out and let me know what you…
