Primitive for macOS

In plain words

Primitive for macOS is a life and fun application that launched in November 2016. The tool reconstructs images using geometric shapes, creating stylized versions of photos or pictures. It's designed for macOS users who want to experiment with algorithmic art generation and transform their images into primitive geometric representations. The application appeals to creative professionals and hobbyists interested in exploring how algorithms can reimagine visual content through simple shapes.

Reconstruct any image using primitive shapes, runs in-browser via WASMMar 2026 · github.com · ▲43

I built a browser-based port of fogleman/primitive — a Go CLI tool that approximates images using primitive shapes (triangles, ellipses, beziers, etc.) via a hill-climbing algorithm. The original tool requires building from source and running from the terminal, which isn't exactly accessible. I compiled the core logic to WebAssembly so anyone can drop an image and watch it get reconstructed shape by shape, entirely client-side with no server involved.
