In plain words

Pushpin is a reverse proxy server that enables realtime API endpoints by keeping client connections open. It supports HTTP streaming, long-polling, WebSockets, and SockJS for older browsers. Designed for developers building realtime services, Pushpin sits between clients and backend servers written in any language, allowing existing APIs to migrate to or away from it without breaking clients. Convenience libraries simplify integration with the proxy layer.

From the sources

Pushpin is a proxy server that pins client connections open, making it easy to build realtime API endpoints. Pushpin supports HTTP streaming, HTTP long-polling, and WebSockets. For compatibility with older browsers, it can also translate from SockJS. Clients communicate using your API contract. Pushpin is a server-side implementation detail. An existing realtime API can be migrated to or away from Pushpin without breaking clients. Since Pushpin is a proxy server, the backend can be written in any language. Convenience libraries are available to make integration easy. With Pushpin, API management systems can manage realtime endpoints. Hey HN! I’ve written a bunch of WebSocket servers over the years to do simple things like state synchronization, WebRTC signaling, and notifying a client when a backend job was run. I realized that if I had a simple way to create a private, temporary, mini-redis that the client could talk to directly, it would save a lot of time. So we created DriftDB. In addition to the open source server that you can run yourself, we also provide https://jamsocket.live where you can use an instance we host on Cloudflare’s edge (~13ms round trip latency from my home in NY).
