Sidelong

Turn everything you learn into writing worth reading

What it does

Sidelong is a writing platform for people who publish. Save the articles, books, videos, and podcasts that spark ideas, and Sidelong surfaces them beside your draft while you write. Ask it to research a topic and get a fully cited report in minutes. Then publish to Substack, Beehiiv, a free hosted blog, your newsletter, or straight to X and LinkedIn. Every word on the page is yours.

Sidelong is the intelligent writing platform that helps you turn everything you learn into something worth reading. Save what you read, watch, and listen to, brainstorm and research as you go, and publish wherever your readers are.

Collect everything you learn, research what matters, write something worth reading, and publish it wherever your readers are. Forgetting something — whether it's a colleague's name or where we put our keys — can be deeply frustrating. This week, psychologist Ciara Greene helps us explore the science of forgetting. I'm going to take you through the seven levels along the journey of trying to remember everything that we read. This article discusses a tested system to increase retention. Learn how to use active reading to remember more from books. From one of America's most brilliant writers, a New York Times bestselling journey through psychology, philosophy, and lots of meditation to show…from sidelong.app

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

  • I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
