Team – Coroutines and async semantics for C++

Team – Coroutines and async semantics for C++ launched on October 7, 2014 with 35 votes and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 12 years on.

In plain words

Team is a C++ library that implements coroutines and asynchronous programming capabilities for the language. It allows programs to pause execution when waiting for external operations like network requests, enabling them to handle other tasks simultaneously without using callbacks. Developers write linear code using the new `async` keyword to mark asynchronous operations. This approach simplifies concurrent programming in C++ by letting independent execution threads pause and resume as needed.

From the sources

Team is a library that adds coroutines and async semantics to C++. By “async”, I mean that that when your program needs to wait for external stuff (like sending data over a network), it can work on other things at the same time. (E.g. a web server can start handling a request from one client while it waits for another to finish receiving its response). By “coroutines”, I mean independent threads of execution that can pause when they need to wait. You write code in a linear way — no callbacks. Team introduces a new keyword, async , to indicate when something should happen asynchronously with respect to the code around it. It takes about one second to run because all of the sleep() s happen…from team.s4y.us

Hello Hacker News. I’m Martin, a graduate student from Prague, and I’ve been working on Coros, a C++ library for task-based parallelism. After spending some time with OpenMP and oneTBB, I wanted to try building a library using modern features from the C++ standard library. I’ve used coroutines for task encapsulation and C++23 expected for exception handling, while trying to maintain good performance. Additionally, I’ve implemented monadic-like behavior to allow easy chaining of tasks, similar to the monadic operations in std::expected. You can check out the project here:…

Tasks are a primitive for asynchronous programming and an alternative to working with threads directly. Instead of creating a thread, performing work, then waiting on it using synchronization primitives, you only define a unit of work and let a scheduler decide when and where to execute it. The threads that the scheduler uses are created once and reused for many tasks throughout the program's lifetime. In most cases, creating and executing a task requires not even a single syscall and is a significantly faster operation than creating a thread, resulting in lower latency. Furthermore, tasks…
