The Quiet Map – Earth's quietest place, measured by seismometers
Hey HN, This started as a personal curiosity and Claude helped me build it out. The Quiet Map reads 98 broadband seismometers from around the world every hour. Ground vibration in the 4–14 Hz band is usually done by human activity - traffic, trains, footsteps etc. Each station is compared against its own history at the same hour of day, and the map names the place currently furthest below its own normal: the quietest place on Earth right now. What it does
A live map of the quietest place on Earth, refreshed hourly. Seismometers feel human noise — traffic, trains, footsteps — this map finds where it has gone quiet.
The Quiet Map reads a global network of about a hundred broadband seismometers to find the quietest place on Earth right now. Cities hum: traffic, trains, industry and footsteps register as continuous ground vibration between 4 and 14 Hz — the band seismologists call cultural noise. Each hour, every station is ranked against its own recent history at the same hour of day, and the map names the place where the ground has fallen quietest relative to its own normal. Everything shown is measurement from the IRIS/EarthScope seismic network, refreshed hourly. This page needs JavaScript to display the live map.
