Products that do what The Quiet Map – Earth's quietest place, measured by seismometers does

Hey HN, This started as a personal curiosity and Claude helped me build it out. The Quiet Map reads 98 broadband seismometers from around the world every hour. Ground vibration in the 4–14 Hz band is usually done by human activity - traffic, trains, footsteps etc. Each station is compared against its own history at the same hour of day, and the map names the place currently furthest below its own normal: the quietest place on Earth right now. Hope you enjoy it and would love your feedback!

Hi HN, I made a web game to practice country locations a while ago and HN liked it, so I thought I'd post my updated version as well. As for how the game works and feels, I'd really recommend you checking it out for yourself, it's free, no signup, no ads. The tech stack is Vue + ts + Tailwind/Daisy for the looks. The learning algorithm is a slight modification of the ts version of FSRS. If you have anything to add, it's open source as well (https://github.com/koljapluemer/learn-worldmap), although not well documented yet. In the end it's just a little sideproject,…

We're Tom and Ryan and we teamed up to build an algorithm with Rust and SIMD to exhaustively search for the longest line of sight on the planet. We can confirm that a previously speculated view between Pik Dankova in Kyrgyzstan and the Hindu Kush in China is indeed the longest, at 530km. We go into all the details at https://alltheviews.world And there's an interactive map with over 1 billion longest lines, covering the whole world at https://map.alltheviews.world Just click on any point and it'll load its longest line of sight. Some of you may remember Tom's post[1] from…

Hi HN, I built a little tool to help me get better at remembering country locations on the map: https://learn-worldmap.netlify.app/ It's made from plain HTML/CSS/JS, and not intended to make any money or anything. Just thought that maybe someone else may enjoy it. Also of course happy about any feedback! Cheerz.

Hi HN, I've been working on a project to address a challenge I faced in the space industry: finding reliable and comprehensive information about satellite ground stations. It often involved piecing together data from scattered sources, which was time-consuming and inefficient. So, I built the Global Ground Station Database (www.find-gs.com). It's a free, searchable directory of over 650 ground stations worldwide, with locations mapped and key details included. The database is built with [Python + React]. We're focused on data accuracy and completeness, and we're constantly adding new…

This was posted before but I'm quite pleased to share a major update for https://oikolab.com. We now have available seven decades of hourly weather data starting from 1950 for any location in the world, thanks to the recent publication of ERA5 reanalysis data from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). ERA5 is gap-free, gridded dataset generated using data assimilation method (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_assimilation), similar to NWP models but with the benefit of hindsight. As far as we're aware of, we're the first weather data…
