For HTML Day 2025 [1], I made a web service that displays the current sky at your approximate location as a CSS gradient. Colours are simulated on-demand using atmospheric absorption and scattering coefficients. Updates every minute, without the use of client-side JavaScript. I built this because measuring my age in years felt boring—I wanted to see the kilometers. The first version only used Earth's orbital speed (~30km/s), but the number moved too slowly. To get the "existential dread" feeling, I switched to using the Milky Way's velocity relative to the CMB (~600km/s). The math takes some liberties (using scalar sum instead of vector) to make the speed feel "fast," but it gets the point across. Under the hood, it's a single HTML file with zero dependencies. This is a service I've built to provide equirectangular cloud maps of the whole Earth, updated every 3 hours, for free. It's based on infrared and visible light data from EUMETSAT, processed to enhance the clouds and try to reduce the impact of surface temperatures on the final image. I built it because it's surprisingly hard to find these kinds of images in a format that's useful to developers and hobbyists. I was building a 3D ISS tracker and wanted to include live clouds but couldn't find anything good, so I got sidetracked, and here we are.

Hey HN, This started as a personal curiosity and Claude helped me build it out. The Quiet Map reads 98 broadband seismometers from around the world every hour. Ground vibration in the 4–14 Hz band is usually done by human activity - traffic, trains, footsteps etc. Each station is compared against its own history at the same hour of day, and the map names the place currently furthest below its own normal: the quietest place on Earth right now. I built a weather and hurricane tracking site for the Eastern Caribbean islands (https://dewedda.com). PHP, MySQL, Cloudflare, Visual Crossing API, Leaflet.js for maps. The interesting part wasn't the stack. It was realizing how much the interpretation layer matters when you're building for a specific region. Wind descriptions, "feels like" calculations, condition summaries, all tuned for temperate climates by default. I've been reworking them for the Eastern Caribbean audience.
