TunnelBuddy

Hi HN, I'm Oli, a solo dev. I’ve been working on TunnelBuddy, a small desktop app that lets you expose your home internet as an HTTPS proxy to a trusted buddy over a WebRTC peer-to-peer tunnel. Typical use cases: You’re travelling but want banks/admin portals to see your actual home IP. A friend in another country needs to reach something that only works from your region. You want to reproduce “this only breaks on my home ISP” bugs without setting up a full VPN mesh. Business / model Right now: The app is free. There’s a tip/donation flow to help cover signalling + infra. No…

What it does

Sometimes you’re away and you want to surf the Internet just as if you were at Home, either because some online services are tied to a given Household, or because you’re abroad and can’t access content available back home. TunnelBuddy is very easy to use: start it on 2 computers, share a one-time password, and that’s it. No account creation, no credit card. The app is free and secure (traffic is encrypted end-to-end). I built this for myself and just want to share it with the world!

TunnelBuddy lets you use your own or a trusted friend’s internet connection over a secure peer-to-peer tunnel. No admin rights, no VPN exit network, and no third-party relays.

TunnelBuddy lets you use your home internet, or a trusted friend's, when you're away. It's like using a VPN, except the VPN belongs to you or a friend, not a random company in a data centre. TunnelBuddy connects two devices you trust and lets one of them browse the internet using the other's connection. Run TunnelBuddy on a device where you want to appear from – your home desktop or a small always-on machine. That machine becomes the "exit" for you or a buddy. On your laptop while travelling, start TunnelBuddy, enter a short-lived one-time code from your host, and it configures a local proxy automatically. Your browser (or system) then browses the web through that trusted connection. Under…from tunnelbuddy.net

Hey HN! I just released weron, a P2P VPN that uses WebRTC for transport which I've been working on for the last couple of months. It can create both layer 2/Ethernet and layer 3/IP overlay networks, and the underlying transport layer can be easily embedded to write your own P2P apps with Go. Compared to for example Tailscale, WireGuard and ZeroTier, its much harder to block on a network level and also significantly easier to set up, while not sacrifing much performance. I'd love to get your feedback :)

  • Hello my name is Ben Ward for the past 3 years I have been remastering the financial game Wall Street Raider created by Michael Jenkins originally on DOS in 1986. It has been a rough journey but I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I just recently redid the website and thought maybe the full story of how this project came to be would interest you all. Thank you for reading.
