What it does
I kept falling asleep to shows or YouTube on my Mac and waking up to a screen still too bright, even at the lowest setting macOS allows. There was no way to dim further, so I built Umbraa: a menu bar utility that pushes brightness well past the system floor, with warm/red tints, a fade-to-black sleep timer, and automatic sunset-to-sunrise dimming. No account, no tracking. $4, macOS 26+. For anyone who's startled awake at 3am to a screen going full blast.

When even the lowest brightness is too bright, watching a movie at night, reading in bed, working late, Umbraa softens every display with an elegant overlay that goes far beyond the system minimum. One slider. Immediate. Effortless. Umbraa lives quietly in your menu bar and feels like a native part of macOS. No clutter, no learning curve. SolaceFeb 2026 · theodorehq.com · ▲171macOS gives you three appearance options: Light, Dark, or Auto. Auto follows sunset, which is a surprisingly blunt heuristic. It doesn't account for season (dark mode at 3:50pm in December, light mode at 9pm in June), and it has zero awareness of actual conditions outside. Overcast and dark at 2pm? Your Mac doesn't care. The deeper problem is that macOS treats appearance, wallpaper, and colour temperature as unrelated settings. You end up stitching together separate tools that don't know about each other, or you just live with the defaults and accept the friction. Solace tries to solve this…

Clipto MCP▲655Hey HN, We recently built Clipto. It’s a tool that lets you search over terabytes of video, audio, and images on your computer, without relying on the cloud. Motivation: we probably all had this similar experience, we know a moment exists in a video or audio, but finding it takes hours scrubbing the timeline. You can send all the media to process in the cloud, but it’s slow, expensive and raises privacy concerns. So we decided to build our own on-device media search engine. How it works (high level): 1. We ingest video, audio, image; normalize formats via ffmpeg; run content analysis to…

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…
