Upstash

Serverless data platform for Redis and Kafka

Upstash launched on March 15, 2022 with 233 votes, #92 of 3,153 launches that month and more than 95% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 4 years on.

What it does

Upstash provides Serverless Redis and Kafka as a service. With per request pricing, you pay only for what you use. You can use any Redis/Kafka clients. The built-in REST API enables use cases with serverless and edge functions.

Serverless Redis, Vector and Search databases with low latency and pay-as-you-go pricing. Upstash is the data platform for modern and AI applications — create a Redis database in seconds.

Data is replicated across 8+ regions worldwide to provide lowest latency for your users. Add/remove regions without any downtime. Start free, then pay only for what you use with per-request pricing. You'll never pay more than the cap price, guaranteed. HTTP-based APIs enable access from serverless and edge functions in addition to supporting standard clients via the Redis protocol. Tested and optimized for Vercel Edge, Cloudflare Workers and Fastly Edge. Packaged instructions covering every Upstash SDK plus the full CLI reference. Your agent loads only the sections it needs. No context bloat, no stale docs. Manage and debug your resources straight from your editor: create databases, analyze…from upstash.com

This is a MVP for Serverless Postgres. 1/ It uses Fly.io[0], which can automatically pause your database after all connections are released (and start it again when new connections join). 2/ It uses Oriole[1], a Postgres extension with experimental support for S3 / Decoupled Storage[2]. 3/ It uses Tigris[3], Globally Distributed S3-Compatible Object Storage. Oriole will automatically backup the data to Tigris using background workers. I wouldn't recommend using this in production, but I think it's in a good spot to provoke some discussion and ideas. You can get it running…

Setting up Kafka or such enterprise oriented software with their clusters or dedicated servers is heavy and bothering enough that most small teams or indie hackers skip it entirely and making compromise to use in-memory queues. I wanted something in between: a persistent queue that is simple to run (one binary, which makes one sqlite db), gets real fault isolation and crash recovery due to Elixir, easy to inspect (open ezra.db in any SQLite browser and see every task), and requires no new client library - it speaks the Redis Streams wire protocol, so any Redis client in any language just…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

Hi HN! I made many small web games in the past with Unity or Phaser. But this time I wanted to make something completely on my own. So I coded a basic game framework in plain JavaScript, and used it to make Almost Pong. This was a really fun project that taught me a lot about JavaScript, and I plan to make more minimalist games with this framework. Interesting fact: Almost Pong doesn't load any assets, all sprites and sounds are generated with code. Happy to answer questions, and please let me know if you have any feedback on the game. Thanks!
