Disclaimer: All I’ve done is write a few config files. PyCharm has worked wonderfully well for me, and the only time where I have to use something else is when I ssh into a server to put together a quick script. That something else tends to be vim, and this is an attempt to get vim as close to PyCharm as possible – especially the shortcuts so that I can work on vim the way I work on PyCharm (well, almost). The end result is still a far cry from PyCharm, but it makes navigating a codebase over ssh significantly less painful (at least for me) Yeah, but I don’t use PyCharm for one-off scripts. Besides, it pleases me to know that if I can ssh into the server (from an ipad, a…from kevinmartinjose.com

My Single-File Python Script I Used to Replace Splunk in My Startup2023 · github.com · ▲313My immediate reaction to today's news that Splunk was being acquired was to comment in the HN discussion for that story: "I hated Splunk so much that I spent a couple days a few months ago writing a single 1200 line python script that does absolutely everything I need in terms of automatic log collection, ingestion, and analysis from a fleet of cloud instances. It pulls in all the log lines, enriches them with useful metadata like the IP address of the instance, the machine name, the log source, the datetime, etc. and stores it all in SQlite, which it then exposes to a very convenient web…

VimLM – A Local, Offline Coding Assistant for Vim2025 · github.com · ▲93VimLM is a local, offline coding assistant for Vim. It’s like Copilot but runs entirely on your machine—no APIs, no tracking, no cloud. - Deep Context: Understands your codebase (current file, selections, references). - Conversational: Iterate with follow-ups like "Add error handling". - Vim-Native: Keybindings like `Ctrl-l` for prompts, `Ctrl-p` to replace code. - Inline Commands: `!include` files, `!deploy` code, `!continue` long responses. Perfect for privacy-conscious devs or air-gapped environments. Try it: ``` pip install vimlm vimlm ```…
A local Python prototyping tool for Jupyter and Streamlit2023 · github.com · ▲65Hey HN! I built a local Python prototyping tool that is finally the Python development environment I've always wanted. It has a Jupyter notebook for data crunching, a database of your choice (Python or MongoDB), and a Streamlit app for building a frontend visualization. You can edit the Streamlit backend via an embedded VSCode editor, or locally on your own IDE. The best part for me is that the database connectors within Jupyter and Streamlit are configured out-of-the-box, so you don't need to spend time thinking about how to tie all that together - you can just pick the database you want to…

Req Update Check2025 · github.com · ▲11Hi HN! This is my first open source package. PyCharm used to have a nifty tool to show you requirements.txt packages that needed updates. You could click a button and open the github page, click a button to upgrade, all in the file. It was super convenient. Then it went away. The package was written in a few languages that I have no experience with, but I figured I'd build something that worked for my use case, and maybe it can help you, too. After installing, you point it at your requirements.txt file, and it will spit out something like this: ---- File caching enabled The following…

Talanoa▲346Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
