My immediate reaction to today's news that Splunk was being acquired was to comment in the HN discussion for that story: "I hated Splunk so much that I spent a couple days a few months ago writing a single 1200 line python script that does absolutely everything I need in terms of automatic log collection, ingestion, and analysis from a fleet of cloud instances. It pulls in all the log lines, enriches them with useful metadata like the IP address of the instance, the machine name, the log source, the datetime, etc. and stores it all in SQlite, which it then exposes to a very convenient web…

VimLM is a local, offline coding assistant for Vim. It’s like Copilot but runs entirely on your machine—no APIs, no tracking, no cloud. - Deep Context: Understands your codebase (current file, selections, references). - Conversational: Iterate with follow-ups like "Add error handling". - Vim-Native: Keybindings like `Ctrl-l` for prompts, `Ctrl-p` to replace code. - Inline Commands: `!include` files, `!deploy` code, `!continue` long responses. Perfect for privacy-conscious devs or air-gapped environments. Try it: ``` pip install vimlm vimlm ```…

Hey HN! I built a local Python prototyping tool that is finally the Python development environment I've always wanted. It has a Jupyter notebook for data crunching, a database of your choice (Python or MongoDB), and a Streamlit app for building a frontend visualization. You can edit the Streamlit backend via an embedded VSCode editor, or locally on your own IDE. The best part for me is that the database connectors within Jupyter and Streamlit are configured out-of-the-box, so you don't need to spend time thinking about how to tie all that together - you can just pick the database you want to…

Hi HN! This is my first open source package. PyCharm used to have a nifty tool to show you requirements.txt packages that needed updates. You could click a button and open the github page, click a button to upgrade, all in the file. It was super convenient. Then it went away. The package was written in a few languages that I have no experience with, but I figured I'd build something that worked for my use case, and maybe it can help you, too. After installing, you point it at your requirements.txt file, and it will spit out something like this: ---- File caching enabled The following…

If you really want people to use your stuff, you should make it easy to get started as possible. For interacting with Github Actions, that means setting up OIDC, so you can prove who did what in which repo when - according to Github themselves. That means for a dev on the other end of things, it should be as easy as: ```yaml -uses atopile/do-thing@v1 ``` Hitch is, boy oh boy was this a PITA to get working in the first place. Honestly, I'd probably rather walk on lego for half an hour. Hopefully, this package should make it a piece of cake - and we all have to mint fewer tokens manually

Hi. :) I’m Andrey, the creator of dstack. I started this project while I was working at JetBrains where I helped the PyCharm team to improve support for Jupyter notebooks. As I was in close contact with many ML devs (who used PyCharm) I was able to see their struggle with running ML workflows. Unlike traditional dev workflows, ML workflows are difficult to run on a local machine (due to the lack of memory, more CPUs/GPUs, etc). This is why people often have to use remote machines (e.g. via SSH), or adopt one of the end-to-end MLOps platforms. Using remote machines is not difficult but…

I have been a devoted vim user for almost 3 decades and frankly it has served me well! Yes I do get tempted to try out the next best thing (though Zed has some serious names so am even more tempted). But frankly something about staying in the terminal that I am just too used to and dont want to change. Though I never bothered updating the vimrc often (did 4 "major" updates in those years) I found myself wanting to update my vimrc for vimspector. This time instead of again trying to understand vimscript and reading the various docs, I let claude code on it and dang it has been a fun journey…

Hello guys, I wanted to get your feedback on my recent project : it aims to unify Vim configuration by aggregating some common plugins in order to provide an easy-to-use « package ». It's called vimified : https://github.com/zaiste/vimified The idea was to make it simpler than Janus (e.g. vundle instead of submodules et al.); it is also somehow similar to spf13-vim. What do you think? Thanks!

PyTogether▲10Google Docs for Python basically. For the past 4 months, I’ve been working on a full-stack project I’m really proud of called PyTogether; a real-time collaborative Python IDE designed with beginners in mind (think Google Docs, but for Python). It’s meant for pair programming, tutoring, or just learning Python together. It’s completely free. No subscriptions, no ads, nothing. Just create an account, make a group, and start a project. Has proper code-linting, extremely intuitive UI, autosaving, and live cursors. There are no limitations at the moment (except for code size to prevent malicious…

Throughout my career, while exploring different programming languages, I realized that having a quick reference was essential for refreshing my memory on the fly. So I developed a habit: for every new language I learned, I’d build a reference file (like python_reference.py) that documented everything from basic syntax to advanced features. Now, a decade later, these files have become my go-to resource. They’ve helped me study for interviews, revisit old projects after years, and now, in the AI era where generating code in unfamiliar languages is more common than ever, I think they’re more…

My first public repo intended to be used by others. While I am curious on how you'd use it, I'd love feedback on the code/setup/pythonic nature of it all. I am on a career break and just experimenting a lot, especially on ways to make AI useful for everyday things. I've coded more in the past 6 weeks than the past 6 years and don't know a lot of python devs. Python was never big language at my previous companies, but something I used a lot for tools and projects going back to college compiler days. Old habits die hard. Are there tools that do this as you screenshot? Probably...…

As a software engineer, my reflex has always been to script everything I can. Scripting is easy, but everything around it is tricky: scripts have to run somewhere, they need access to credentials, they need to be monitored. None of it is simple. No-code automation platforms such as Zapier or IFTTT are too restrictive for technical tasks; CI/CD platforms make it easy to script tasks related to a repository, but are limited when trying to do anything else. I wanted the low level control you have when writing scripts while retaining the comfort of a platform managing execution for me. So I…

Building on the momentum of lume, we’re excited to share pylume, a new Python library that makes it easier to manage macOS and Linux virtual machines (VMs) on Apple Silicon directly from your Python code. pylume extends lume's command-line functionality to Python, giving developers the ability to integrate VM management into their Python scripts or applications. Why pylume? While lume makes managing VMs via the command line simple, pylume brings those features to Python, allowing developers to control VMs directly from their code. Here’s why pylume might be useful: • Native Python API:…

Hey HN! I built Python Playground, a Chrome extension that gives you a ready-to-use Python environment right in your browser - no installation needed. It runs Python locally via Pyodide (WebAssembly) with most popular libraries included out of the box, plus a package manager to install additional modules from PyPI. The environment supports inline data visualization with Matplotlib and Plotly, file upload/download through a sandboxed filesystem, and the ability to save and reload snippets. Everything executes entirely on the client, so it works offline and nothing ever leaves your…
