Visual representation of Hacker News comments

Sometimes I want to make sure I read every comment in a Thread. Also comments that come in later. For example, when I posted my laptop comparison map I got a ton of great feedback: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8405065 and I wanted to make sure I don't miss any of these. For this purpose, I made this visual representation: http://social.gnod.com/hn:8405065 I think you can grok what it shows. It simply templates all comments in a recursive way. Read items turn blue. What it does

In the maker’s words, at launch

Sometimes I want to make sure I read every comment in a Thread. Also comments that come in later. For example, when I posted my laptop comparison map I got a ton of great feedback: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8405065 and I wanted to make sure I don't miss any of these. For this purpose, I made this visual representation: http://social.gnod.com/hn:8405065 I think you can grok what it shows. It simply templates all comments in a recursive way. Read items turn blue. You can mark interesting items and they turn green. I find it interesting to look at different threads this way. Every one has it's own unique appearance. Here is a very short one for example: http://social.gnod.com/hn:8710416 I use this bookmarklet to switch between HNs regular view and this visual representation: javascript:l=location.href; if (l.indexOf("y")>-1) a=l.replace(/[^0-9]*/,"social.gnod.com/hn:"); else a=l.replace(/[^0-9]*/,"news.ycombinator.com/item?id="); location.href="http://"+a;

Does the same job

    I've been working on and off on a Chrome Extension for Hacker News, the extension focusses on improved usability rather than design. I can almost guarantee that after a day you won't want to go back to regular Hacker News. Give it a try, features include: - Improved readability - Quick inline replies from comments page - Quick profiles with social network info when hovering over usernames - Filtering of stories based on terms and phrases / domain or user - Endless scrolling - Collapsible comment threads - Social sharing for Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Buffer Forks, improvements and comments…

    Our weekend project - HN Showcase, browse "Show HN" posts2011 · ▲63

    http://www.hnshowcase.com Moses (nnythm) and I browse Hacker News daily. Show HN posts are some of our favorite parts of HN. We wanted to create a way to browse Show HN articles, even those that might not quite make it to the front page. We created http://www.hnshowcase.com last weekend to make discovering projects posted on HN easier. It searches all "Show HN" posts and generates a thumbnail view for each of them. You can sort by submission date, points, and number of comments, and navigate with left/right or j/k keys. We used the following technologies: HN Search API, Pyramid web…

  • Hi HN, I built Eigendrum, a web tool that solves the 2D wave equation for arbitrary shapes so you can hear what they sound like as drums. How it works: * Solves -∇²u = λu using finite element analysis (Kφ = λMφ) on a triangle mesh. * Validated to <0.1% error against closed-form solutions for circles (Bessel zeros) and rectangles. * Sound model factors in strike location, Rayleigh damping, and mallet width. * Includes Kac drums I & II to demonstrate identical sound spectra from different geometries. * No frameworks, build steps, or dependencies. Repo and tests:…
