What it does
Paste any hex code and find out what the color is called. If it has no name of its own, we find the closest one that does.
Paste the hex code into the box at the top of the page. Three formats all work: Every color also has its own page, so you can go straight to /color/3972a4 if you already know the code. Most do not, and that is normal. There are 16,777,216 possible hex codes and 24,648 named colors, so the overwhelming majority of colors have never been given a name by anyone. When that happens we find the nearest color that does have a name, and label it a close match rather than an exact one. In practice the nearest name is very close. For a randomly chosen color the typical difference is about 1.2 ΔE, which is around the threshold most people can detect at all. From five open sources. Nothing here is…from whatcoloristhishex.com

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
