WHORL is a microslice-sequencer designed to extract usable rhythmic and tonal material from any audio file. Features 16-step modular sequencing, per-step effect chains, and 4 hardware memory slots.
WHORL analyzes the transient intensity and spectral weight of the loaded audio, separating it into three core dynamic categories: punchy attacks , tonal bodies , and sustaining textures . Slices are triggered across a 16-step sequencer. Rhythms can be crafted manually or generated through a probability-based rhythm engine. WHORL was created by Scrap Brain Audio to eliminate decision fatigue and deliver usable sequences in seconds. Each step can be split into 1/32 subdivisions or extended with sustain ties (>). Empty steps can play digital silence or a subtle ambient texture captured from the source audio. I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it.
