Word42, a wordprocessor inspired by MS Word and Abiword
Word42 is a classic word processor, written from scratch in C on GTK 4, Pango and Cairo: inspired by classic Microsoft Word and by AbiWord, on a modern text stack. Free software, GPL-3.0-or-later.
What it does
Written from scratch in C on GTK 4, Pango and Cairo: a menu bar, two toolbars, a ruler, a status bar and a page. Inspired by classic Microsoft Word and AbiWord, on a modern text stack that handles Unicode, OpenType and complex scripts properly. A working word processor, not a demo — everything below ships today. The user guide describes every command in the program; the status page and architecture notes tell the rest. An unsigned Word42.app from the releases page . First launch is a right-click ▸ Open. Build from source with Meson — docs/BUILD.md has the details; a Flatpak manifest is in build-aux/from word42.org

Hi all, Finding a good data structure for a word processor is a difficult problem. My notebook diaries on the problem go back 25 years when I was frustrated with using Word for my diploma thesis - it was slow and unstable at that time. I ended up getting pretty hooked on the problem. Right now I’m taking a professional break and decided to finally use the time to push these ideas further, and build MiniWord — a WYSIWYG word processor in Python. My goal is to have a native, non-HTML-based editor that stays simple, fast, and is hackable. So far I am focusing on getting the fundamentals right.…
