I made a search engine for Hacker News2024 · hackernews.demo.vectara.com · ▲211I love HN but always felt the search with algolia is okay but does have some limitations. Since I work at Vectara I decided to try and create a better search for HN. It's based on data from roughly the last 6 months of HN stories and comments. Would love to hear feedback and how useful this is relative to the existing search.
My recommendation engine for Hacker News2023 · hn-recommend.julienc.me · ▲314Hi! I’m Julien and I built a recommendation engine for Hacker News. I feel like this website is a gold mine. Every day, I find some very interesting stories about a topic. And sometimes, I want to find other stories covering that same topic but I can’t. Hacker News has years of history of awesome discussion and ressources. Unfortunately, I think HN Algolia isn’t helpful in searching these old threads. As a student, I want to learn a lot from this website. This is why I created HN Recommend. Input a sentence or the URL of an article, and get the most popular and similar posts from Hacker…
YCombinato – A domain-hacked "Hacker News" client2023 · news.ycombinato.com · ▲34Hi HN, This is a little "HN Reader" experiment I made using a domain hack of "news.ycombinato.com" <- notice the "r" is missing. Basically, I thought it would be cool to make a "clone" of the "Hacker News" URL so you can quickly navigate to "YCombinato" from any post on "news.ycombinator" by just dropping the r in the domain. The benefit is a few extra features like; sorting, searching etc... Unfortunately I realized it's essentially a phishing attack :( according to the browser, which means there will probably be a warning message on most browsers... but it's still usable and hopefully…

For example, paste this into Slack or Discord or whatever: https://news.ycombinator1.com/item?id=30179549 It works with comments, too: https://news.ycombinator1.com/item?id=30180253 Hastily-developed source: https://github.com/statico/ycombinator1.com
A Hacker News client that only shows YouTube videos2025 · hn-yt.netlify.app · ▲12Hey HN, I wanted a way to quickly see only the YouTube videos being shared on Hacker News without wading through other links. So, I built this little tool. I used to use https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=youtube.com to check YouTube links, but it lacked thumbnails, so I built one just to do it. It uses the hn.algolia.com API and is built with Nuxt3. I originally made this for myself but thought others might find it useful too. You can try it here: https://hn-yt.netlify.app/ Happy to hear any feedback or suggestions!

Talanoa▲346Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

Almost eight years ago I launched an online “Linux sysadmin course for newbies” here at HN. It was a side-project that went well, but never generated enough money to allow me to fully commit to leaving the Day Job. After surviving the Big C, and getting made redundant I thought I might improve and relaunch it commercially – but my doctors are a pessimistic bunch, so it looked like I didn’t have the time. Instead, I rejigged/relaunched it via a Reddit forum this February as free and open - and have now gathered a team of helpers to ensure that it keeps going each month even after I can’t…
