For the past few months, I've been working on a website that answers two different questions: - Where in my city have the best travel times to all the things and people I care about? - Given a listing, how far is it from all the things and people I care about? Personally this was fueled by my own frustrations when I was apartment hunting in NYC. I was frustrating to have to juggle so many Google Maps tabs when I was evaluating a listing, and it was also annoying to not have full confidence that I was even searching in the right places. I wanted to be close to work, a Trader Joe's, and a…

Show HN: I built a tool to calculate real tech salaries across cities (after tax & COL) As a software engineer obsessed with data-driven decisions, I wanted to quantify how much better/worse other cities would be compared to my current home in Berlin. While sites like Glassdoor and levels.fyi tell you how much you can earn, they don't show what you actually keep after taxes and living costs. So I built Tech City Index - a tool that compares cities based on actual purchasing power for software engineers, combining: * Real-time salary data from levels.fyi * Cost of living data from Numbeo…

Excited to share my New Year’s project. For a long time, I’ve wanted to build H-1B data directly into Levels.fyi. Every time I went looking for this data elsewhere, it was a frustrating experience to use. Most H-1B sites felt antiquated, unintuitive, cluttered with ads, or just overwhelming to use. The data was there, but it wasn’t usable, and definitely not pleasant to explore. So out of that frustration, I decided to build the H-1B data experience I personally wanted to use. Right into Levels.fyi. https://levels.fyi/h1b/ Some other pages I'm excited about: Wage Heatmap:…

Hi HN - Like many in tech, I've thought about relocating to different cities. But comparing salaries, income tax, housing costs, and overall cost of living is hard. It's hard to know where you'd actually save up more money. So I built a site to make it easier. It's my first HN project, hope you find it useful. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

With social media and now AI, its important to keep the indie web alive. There are many people who write frequently. Blogosphere tries to highlight them by fetching the recent posts from personal blogs across many categories. There are two versions: Minimal (HN-inspired, fast, static): https://text.blogosphere.app/ Non-minimal: https://blogosphere.app/ If you don't find your blog (or your favorite ones), please add them. I will review and approve it.
