Zrok: open-source peer to peer sharing

zrok is a fun incubator project I've been working on over the last six months. The goal was to see how we could build a tool in the genre of "reverse-proxy-meets-streamlined-sharing", like a lot of the other tools that you probably know, already love, or use regularly. I've been part of the OpenZiti team for years now, and it was an obvious choice to use OpenZiti as the foundation for zrok. We already know OpenZiti inside and out, and we know how it can best be leveraged to build a tool like this so that it's secure, zero-trust, and scalable, all while still keeping it friction-free and easy…

Zrok: open-source peer to peer sharing launched on February 7, 2023 with 22 votes, #1,285 of 3,829 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 3 years on.

In plain words

Zrok is an open-source peer-to-peer sharing tool that functions as a reverse proxy for securely sharing private endpoints. Built on OpenZiti, it enables users to create ephemeral URLs for sharing HTTP services while maintaining zero-trust security principles. Designed for developers and teams who need frictionless sharing without compromising on security or scalability, zrok simplifies the process of exposing local services for temporary access.

zrok is a next-generation sharing platform, built on top of the powerful, secure OpenZiti network architecture. I'm fortunate that I've had the opportunity to work on many interesting projects throughout my career. I was one of the original developers who broke ground on the OpenZiti project back in 2017. Most of my work on OpenZiti centered on the fabric , data and control plane design, and designing abstractions that would support a lot of what became the "edge" layers. It's been quite exciting to watch OpenZiti blossom and grow. For the last six months, I've had the opportunity to re-approach the world of zero-trust and next-generation networking from the other side of the stack. Instead…from blog.openziti.io

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
