In Our Time has almost 1,000 episodes on everything from Cleopatra to the evolution of teeth to plasma physics, all still available, so it's my starting point to learn about most topics. This weekend is the ABC Classic FM countdown, which prompted me to dust off an old un-published data visualisation of rankings from previous years. I've considered adding a search function, but I also kind of like that it requires a bit of exploration in the current form. Some of the code is a bit clunky and I wouldn't mind refactoring it. I'm also not sure about browser compatibility - I've only got access to a couple of devices to test it on.

I am excited to announce a new tool for music producers and audio enthusiasts - a music audio search engine. With just a simple description of the groove you're looking for, our semantic search engine will output the most similar audio in seconds. I used the Freesound.org API to upload over 3,000 grooves to MongoDB, and combined all the relevant data such as tags, title, description, BPM, etc. into OpenAI's Text-Davinci to generate a unique description of each sound. I scraped every Show HN from the last 12 months (41,301 posts) plus the full comment tree of every launch with 10+ comments, ~100k comment timestamps, all from the Algolia HN API. The median launch gets 2 points and 0 comments. For launches that do get traction, half the comments they'll ever get arrive within 7.2 hours and 90% within 26, and the top decile decays on the same clock as everyone else. I was curious about the most discussed topics on HN over time, so I started analyzing and categorizing all front-page posts with a simple LLM workflow. The result is an interactive chart that displays the trending topics across different time frames. Although the analysis is still relatively basic, I think it provides an interesting perspective on our community. It will be cool to observe changes over a longer time horizon, such as the rise and fall of topics like web3 and AI.
