The book page links to a blog post that explains how I got about it (and has a link to sample content), but the TL&DR is that I could not find a lot of books that were on "our" history _and_ were larded with technical details. So I set about writing one, and some five years later I'm happy to share the result. I think it's one of the few "computer history" books that has tons of code, but correct me if I'm wrong (I wrote this both to tell a story and to learn :-)). My favorite languages are Smalltalk and Lisp, but as an Emacs user, I've been using the latter for much longer and for my…

Hi HN! Korean high school senior here, about to start CS in college. I built a browser engine from scratch in C++ to understand how browsers work. First time using C++, 8 weeks of development, lots of debugging—but it works! Features: - HTML parsing with error correction - CSS cascade and inheritance - Block/inline layout engine - Async image loading + caching - Link navigation + history Hardest parts: - String parsing(html, css) - Rendering - Image Caching & Layout Reflowing What I learned (beyond code): - Systematic debugging is crucial - Ship with known bugs rather than chase…

*Claude Code History Viewer – A macOS Desktop App for Reviewing Claude Code History at a Glance* Hello everyone, I have a habit of reviewing my coding history when working with AI. It's important to trace back and understand "how did I get to this result?" Recently, while using Claude Code, I found it quite inconvenient to check the history in separate terminal tabs or editor windows. So I built a desktop app called *Claude Code History Viewer* using *Tauri + React + Rust*. ## Key Features & Highlights * *Claude Code Conversation History Visualization* When you install Claude Code,…

I was looking around for an MCP server that could connect Anna's Archive to Claude Desktop, as I wanted to be able to search and download books directly through the interface. I couldn't find any public implementations, so ended up building one myself. What it does? - It searches Anna's Archive by keywords. - It downloads books from search results. - It works directly in Claude Desktop through MCP. Check out the repository's README for detailed installation and configuration instructions. The code is fully open source and builds run on GitHub Actions for transparency. I figured I'd share,…

Hello HN! In a recent "Ask HN: What are you working on?" thread, I mentioned I was working on OCRing a large book: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41971614 The post generated some interest so I thought I would keep HN posted. The book is Saint-Simon’s Memoirs -- an invaluable historical account of the French court under Louis XIV, full of wit, sharp observations, and of incredible literary value. I'm OCRing the edition of reference made between 1879-1930, that contains a lot of comments and footnotes: 45 volumes, ~27,000 pages. Here's a link to a blog post that describes…

Hello HN, I’m Kamil. The past months have been filled with news about ChatGPT, Bard, etc. Thankfully, there are some heroic attempts to bring that power to the users. I wanted to contribute to that effort with my side project, an extension for Chrome: it makes searching the history by meaning – instead of the exact words – possible. This is only a proof of concept, building on the excellent transformers.js[0], and running entirely in the browser. My goal here is to explore the possibilities unlocked by a client-side AI. I would love to have your feedback, to know which direction that project…

Hi HN, As many of you already know, Google has discontinued their coding competitions and is shutting down the competitions website. Before it's gone forever, I've scraped everything I could from their website and set up my own archive. (Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with Google besides participating in these contests years ago) While the initial version was ready back in March, today I'm rolling out big and hopefully the final update, so this might be a good time to share it with the HN community. Everything is static HTML and SQLite archives (with a very minimal backend to serve files…

Hey HN! I'm open-sourcing a little weekend side project. It's a terminal UI that generates parsers for webpages using AI, and a library that runs these parsers while you browse (it connects to Chrome over CDP). You can parse Twitter, LinkedIn, and HN posts and they get saved to a DuckDB database, so you can query them later. Contributions welcome! I wrote a bit more about it here: https://0thernet.substack.com/p/memo-2-selectron

This is a site that maps the references on Gary Overacre's 1980s UNIX Magic poster to short write-ups with sources. I posted an earlier version about a year ago [1]. Since then I rewrote some of the annotations, added deep-linking to individual markers and a frame/sidebar view, gave the site a terminal-style redesign, and fixed historical inaccuracies (daemon etymology, nroff origin, B language vs. Multics, etc.). Contributions and comments welcome; each marker is a GitHub issue. site: https://unixmagic.net [1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43019136

Checking on some old material to provide some cross-referencing[1] I got this message: We've temporarily limited requests for old items. I've always taken it for granted that HN contained useful information that I'd be able to retrieve whenever I found the need, but this has brought me up short. Perhaps older discussions will eventually become unavailable. Will Google cache still have them? Will the Wayback machine still have them? How convenient will they be to find in the future. Probably this is a temporary glitch to prevent some overly enthusiastic crawler from bringing the site to a…

I built this because I got tired of watching Claude Code read through massive files just to find a few functions. Sourcerer lets AI agents search code semantically and grab exactly the code chunks they need instead of burning tokens on whole files. It uses tree-sitter to parse your codebase and creates a searchable index. So instead of "read auth.py (538 lines)", an agent can search for "user authentication logic" and get back just the relevant functions. As I started to use Claude Code to do more random tasks I realized I could basically build any CLI tool and it would use it. So I built one that controls the browser and open-sourced it. It should work with Codex or any other CLI-based agent! I have a long term idea where the models are all local and then the tool is privacy preserving because it's easy to remove PII from text, but I'd definitely not recommend using this for anything important just yet. You'll need a Gemini key until I (or someone else) figure out how to distill a local version out of that part of the pipeline. Github link:…
