Hi HN, I’ve been working with Kubernetes for over a decade, since the alpha days, and was involved in kube-aws project before AWS launched EKS. For the past four years, I’ve been helping friends and small businesses cut costs by running Kubernetes on Hetzner Cloud, which I’ve found to be rock solid and by far the best priced provider. Provisioning a cluster on Hetzner is now straightforward, thanks to tools like k3s and hetzner-k3s, but configuring it for your specific needs still takes time and expertise. I built Edka to make that part easy: spin up a production ready cluster in ~2 minutes,…

Hello HN! I'm building mvsqlite, a distributed variant of SQLite with MVCC transactions, that runs on FoundationDB. It is a drop-in replacement that just needs an `LD_PRELOAD` for existing applications using SQLite. I made this because Blueboat (https://github.com/losfair/blueboat) needs a native SQL interface to persistent data. Apparently, just providing a transactional key-value store isn’t enough - it is more easy and efficient to build complex business logic on an SQL database, and it seems necessary to bring a self-hostable distributed SQL DB onto the platform.…

I created a web page to compare different analytical databases (both self-managed and services, open-source and proprietary) on a realistic dataset. It contains 20+ databases, each with installation and data loading scripts. And they can be compared to each other on a set of 43 queries, by data load time or by storage size. There are switches to select different types of databases for comparison - for example, only MySQL compatible or PostgreSQL compatible. If you play with the switches, many interesting details will be uncovered. Full description:…

This is the newest update to my CLI tool to quickly create cheap Kubernetes clusters in Hetzner Cloud. This update adds autoscaling support, so clusters created with this tool now can behave similar to managed Kubernetes clusters, which I think is awesome. I received a lot of feedback since the last update so I hope anyone interested could try the new version as well. Thanks a lot for the feedback so far! Hey HN! We’re Emma and Chris, founders of Velvet (https://www.usevelvet.com). Velvet proxies OpenAI calls and stores the requests and responses in your PostgreSQL database. That way, you can analyze logs with SQL (instead of a clunky UI). You can also set headers to add caching and metadata (for analysis). Backstory: We started by building some more general AI data tools (like a text-to-SQL editor). We were frustrated by the lack of basic LLM infrastructure, so ended up pivoting to focus on the tooling we wanted. So many existing apps, like Helicone, were hard to use as power…

At JigsawStack.com, we are using Redis by Upstash to store and validate API keys among other datasets for speedy retrieval. As we scaled to more Asian markets and added replicated nodes, the cost started to shoot up while performance got a lot worse. I discovered hosting SQLite on Fly which was crazy fast & cheap with the full power of a relational database but difficult to use and scale without writing tons of code & devops. Then I found Turso as a managed service which is pretty cool but again got really expensive and had to manage a bunch of replications manually and pay per replications…

Hey folks, I'm super excited to announce the release of a new UI for Apache Kafka, Confluent, Redpanda and Kinesis that focuses on Teams and Data Mesh. (Note: the desktop version is also very popular with individual developers!) Why is this important? Because providing a solution that can be used by both IT and business (non-technical) users is essential when building applications that process business data. Of course, we are mainly developers working on Kadeck. So you won't miss any of the features you need to troubleshoot and monitor Kafka and your applications. In fact, we have put a lot…

Hey! I'm Andrei. I got frustrated by how people tend to build overcomplicated backend systems, being "motivated" by big tech case studies and popular books. So, I started exploring lean architecture, and building my digital garden of ideas, approaches and data that align with this direction. Here I want to present one of the tools – Sizing tool for PostgreSQL. I've benchmarked PostgreSQL on different EC2 instances and disks, with different initial data sets to see performance that these instances can give you. And I've built a tool to visualize this data, which I welcome you to explore. So,…

Hi HN — we've built a testing framework for Supabase that spins up fast, isolated Postgres databases for each test case. It’s designed to make RLS policies easy to validate with real database state, without global test fixtures or mock auth. Features: - Instant isolated Postgres DBs per test - Automatic rollback after each test - RLS-native testing with `.setContext()` for auth simulation - Flexible seeding (SQL, CSV, JSON, JS) - Works with Jest, Mocha, and any async test runner - CI-friendly (runs cleanly in GitHub Actions) We also published example projects and a free set of tutorials:…

Hi HN, Gabriel here, one of the developers at Latitude.sh (we're a bare metal cloud provider). Over the past year or so, I've been the primary developer building Latitude.sh Databases – our take on a managed PostgreSQL service. The core idea was to offer a straightforward and competitively priced option for developers who need reliable PostgreSQL without overly complex configurations, leveraging the performance benefits of running directly on bare metal. It runs on our global bare metal infrastructure. Key features we've implemented include: * Built-in monitoring & connection pooling * IP…
