Hi HN! Since Youtube no longer allows AdBlockers, I built my own extension to get around their video ads. If there is an ad it temporarily manipulates the video; Mutes the volume, sets speed to 10x, and skips it if there is a button. There has been many recent discoveries (including the leak) about how 16 media companies dominated Google Search results, abusing their status to rank very high on a bunch of garbage they put out. And like that saying goes, I can't change the world, but I can change myself. I don't want to look at their bullshit anymore when I search for food recipes or product reviews. So this extension is my way of protesting. Full write up: https://thesolofoundernewsletter.com/p/secondpage

Google sends 16 large media brands (588 individual brands) a combined 3 billion+ clicks per month. They rank first page on 85% of all searches. They are inundating the web with things like subpar product recommendations, AI written listicles, and cookie cutter reviews. I don't like that, so I made an open source extension that blocks all of them from search results. (I'm not a developer, and I made this with Claude Opus's help)

Firefox 149 ships adblock-rust (Brave's Rust engine, MPL-2.0) completely disabled with no UI. It's controlled by two about:config prefs with no WebExtension API, so you can't touch them programmatically from a standard extension. This extension gives it a UI: ETP toggle (via browser.privacy API, instant), filter list manager with clipboard helpers for the manual about:config steps, and 8 preset lists. You can also add your own if you so desire.

hi friends! i'm pretty tired of engagement bait and all the political nonsense on my x/twitter feed. i was curious if i could use an llm to filter out these type of content, so i prototyped a quick chrome extension. it uses LLama 3.3 to analyze the tweet through https://groq.com/ (because they are super-super fast). the extension is available in the chrome store, also there is a link to the repo. - you can tweak the system prompt for the filtering - but you need your own API key from Groq (you can get one for free)
