Hi everyone! I’m the founder of Explanations (https://explanations.app). I’m building a website where students can get college level math & physics help for 1/10th the cost of private tutoring. You’d type a question, and your teacher replies by drawing a Youtube/KhanAcademy-style video; and this happens asynchronously throughout the week. When I was studying at MIT, I often had to wait 40-60 minutes in line just to get 5 minutes of “help” from a TA - when I needed 1-2 hours. I understood that TAs can’t spend all their time helping me. That’s understandable. But what made…

heyo! Explainpaper lets you upload a research paper PDF. If you don't understand a formula or sentence, just highlight it and the tool explains it for you I built this a few weeks ago to help me read a neuroscience paper, and it works pretty well! I didn't fine-tune GPT-3, but I do take a lot of context from the paper and feed that into the prompt (not the whole paper). Ppl have uploaded AI, biology, economics, philosophy papers and even law documents. Works in Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French and more as well!

Hi HN! I built Oh Yah! to help my sons (age 7 and 10) stick to daily routines without constant reminders. The core idea: minimal distractions during tasks by locking navigation when a timer is running, plus optional photo-based task completion for accountability Built with React Native/Expo and Firebase. The trickiest part was designing the UX to be simple enough for kids with minimal distractions while giving parents enough control – ended up with a task-definition system that lets parents create weekly schedules with daily toggles instead of duplicating tasks across days It's on the…

I just built an app for children and parents to ask questions to explain to kids and to for parents to ask how to deal with any parenting situation. For example a 4 year old may ask “why does the plate break when it falls?” Sometimes it can be hard to answer that in a way that a child can understand. The system will go out and scour the web for information the topic, and then rewrite in a kid friendly and safe way. It goes and finds related images, videos, products and reference links. It also gives related words ,quiz, and some games and experiments to try with your child to see if they are…

I wanted to share a project that I've been working on designed to help young kids go from reading single words to reading whole books. My husband and I started spending a lot of time teaching our 5-year-old (Alex) to read because our school district is exclusively doing remote learning and I was skeptical that he could learn to read over Zoom. We used flashcards (which Alex found boring) and then combined them into sentences (which Alex found interesting). But the sentence approach requires a lot of arranging pieces of paper and remembering which words you are working on. So I developed…

Hi HN! I made a tool that autogenerates simple, high-level explanations of concepts and organizes them in a somewhat university course-like structure so that it's easier to see how things are structured. Currently it has about 20,000 concepts on a range of topics but that's just what I generated so far, it should work with more obscure topics in the future. I love learning about random topics where I don't have a good background in like history or linguistics, but it's hard to figure out what topics there (you don't know what you don't know) are in certain fields and what they are even…

Hey there! Out of the necessity to teach my son a new language, I developed an app just for him. After months of use and realizing how effective it was, I decided to make it available to the public. Now, I’m looking for your support, feedback, and possibly help in reaching potential customers. Take a look and let me know your thoughts! Thank you!

Hey HN, I’m a dev and a dad to a 10-year-old. I built this because I caught my daughter using ChatGPT to do her history homework. She wasn't learning; she was just acting as a "middleware" between the AI and the paper. The Backstory: I realized the problem isn't the AI—it's the zero-friction answers. Most "AI for kids" apps are just "parrots"—they mimic intelligence by repeating patterns. What’s Different: Qurio is a "Bicycle" for the mind. It treats the child like a future "Architect" rather than a "Junior Executor." Technically, it wraps an LLM in a strict "Socratic Loop." It detects…
