Our small team had stitched together rsync, a fragile NFS mount, and an S3 bucket—none of it observable, all of it waiting to bite us.     I built a SQLite VFS in Rust that serves cold queries directly from S3 with sub-second performance, and often much faster. It’s called turbolite. It is experimental, buggy, and may corrupt data. I would not trust it with anything important yet. I wanted to explore whether object storage has gotten fast enough to support embedded databases over cloud storage. Filesystems reward tiny random reads and in-place mutation.     Most S3 usage is PUT, GET, DELETE, LIST with basic auth. This does exactly that. SigV4 auth, multipart uploads, range requests. Storage is just files on disk. No versioning, no ACLs, no encryption. Use MinIO or AWS if you need those.

    In my spare time I've been trying to solve the problem of network filesystems being too slow. To that end I've created CacheFS. CacheFS keeps a lazy local copy of your network drive in an attempt to make your network drive appear as fast as your local drive. The project is far from consumer-ready, but it has hit a major milestone: It caches reads and doesn't appear to corrupt anything.
