TinyFast▲319I am a developer. I have been building stuff for the last 13 years. One common challenge in all my projects is compressing assets to make them as small as possible. I used to end up using online compressors, but this has a lot of privacy concerns. So, I finally set down for couple of weeks and built this simple app. I can just drag and drop assets in it and it shrinks them. It currently supports around 25 file types. I built a lot of iOS apps but this is the first time building a macOS app, so any feedback is welcome.

I have posted a much earlier version of this over a year ago [0]. Since then a lot has changed. Obviously, the name has changed. This happened for the paper publication [1]. I have also optimized the speed, integrated ISA-L for special cases, limited the compression-ratio-dependent maximum memory consumption, and finally added parallelized CRC32 computation, which adds ~5% overhead no matter the number of cores used. At this point, I am leaning towards calling it production-ready although there are still many ideas for improvements. Redoing the benchmarks of the older Show HN, would look…

Link to the demo: https://gildas-lormeau.github.io/zip.js/demos/demo-create-file.html To take advantage of this performance gain, you need to add at least 4 files to the zip file and use a Chromium-based browser as the library uses the recent CompressionStream API [1] which allows native file compression. Hello HN! We’re Dan and Vaughan, based in Cambridge, UK. We recently launched cunoFS, a filesystem for fast, POSIX object storage access. Yes, we’ve heard that “Object Storage is just not suitable for POSIX workloads” or that “workloads should be rewritten to natively support S3”. But what if it could be? And often much faster than S3-native apps? We’ve worked hard to make this possible, without the shortcomings of other approaches. Summary here: - Run (unmodified) applications with S3/AZ/GCP or “S3 compatible” storage, for example: ls s3:// az://…
