I love DDG !bangs so much, that I kept finding myself in need of custom search !bangs... So I built them! I absolutely love DDG's search !bangs! ... even more than their stance on privacy. If you've ever found yourself wishing for a custom search !bang you're in the same boat as me :) Sure, sometimes submitting a public !bang is the way to go... But not always. Hello HN! I made this Firefox extension to extend upon DuckDuckGo's idea of bangs (check https://duckduckgo.com/bangs if you aren't familiar with them) and also allow the use of any search engine with them. I found DuckDuckGo's bangs fascinating, but was disappointed by how little search engines inherit that feature. I like to use DuckDuckGo-style bangs and snaps, they are fast and efficient shortcuts. However, neither Kagi nor DuckDuckGo resolves them as quickly as I would like and subjectively Google has better search results than DuckDuckGo. I've been working on a little open source [1] search engine, nilch. I noticed that nearly all well known search engines, including the alternative ones, tend to be run by companies of various sizes with the goal to make money, so they either fill your results with ads or charge you money, and I dislike this because search is the backbone of the internet and should not be commercial, so it runs in a not-for-profit style and aims to survive on donations. Hi HN! This started late last year as an afternoon project to play around with ElasticSearch, and then I kept thinking of new features I wanted to add. I still have a lot of things I want to build, but now seemed like a good time to put it out there: even if the results aren’t nearly the quality I’d like, I’ve still found it useful and I want to show it off! I’ve been working on it since September 2021, but only in fits and starts. The entire thing runs on a computer in my living room (there’s a picture on the About page); I haven’t done any load testing so we’ll see how it holds up.

So a while ago I was thinking it would be neat to build a site that had the most absolute utility. The idea I came up with was a site to store those little protips that are super useful, if you know them ahead of time. I hired a guy to work on it with me, and ClueDB was born: http://cluedb.com/ Please give it a whirl (it uses Twitter auth as login but doesn't tweet anything) and tell me what you think! I've always been frustrated with search engines. Google used to be the one I always used, but it's now completely overrun with ads and AI Overview.
