Hi HN - My name is Andrew, and I'm a high school student. This is a write-up on StratoSpore, a payload I designed and launched to the stratosphere. The goal was to test if we could estimate physical altitude based on algae fluorescence (using a lightweight ML model trained on the sensor data). The blog post covers the full engineering mess/process, including: - The Hardware: Designing PCBs for the AS7263 spectral sensor and Pi Zero 2 W. -The biological altimeter: How I tried to correlate biological stress (fluorescence) with altitude. - The Communications: A custom lossy compression…

This is a service I've built to provide equirectangular cloud maps of the whole Earth, updated every 3 hours, for free. It's based on infrared and visible light data from EUMETSAT, processed to enhance the clouds and try to reduce the impact of surface temperatures on the final image. I built it because it's surprisingly hard to find these kinds of images in a format that's useful to developers and hobbyists. I was building a 3D ISS tracker and wanted to include live clouds but couldn't find anything good, so I got sidetracked, and here we are.

Hello, I wanted to share with you all a interactive map of the economics and physics constraints of the AI buildout. It has macro drivers, industrial chokepoints, and where that shows up in markets. I've added 393 nodes and 562 edges to capture other supply / physics constraints as well. There's no sign up, and no pay wall, it's all free. Please let me know what you think!

We built a robotic plotter that creates ephemeral visualizations of website carbon footprints using water vapor on glass. It analyzes website energy data and translates it into misty patterns, making the invisible impact of digital infrastructure visible. Built during a residency at a cultural venue in Belgium. Code and build details here : https://gitlab.constantvzw.org/gijs/carbon-aware/-/tree/main....

Hi All, I created my company: Globemallow.io. Browser extensions for reducing the carbon footprint of the internet. Globemallow calculates CO2 emitted and energy (kWh) usage on webpage load, and provides a personalized sustainable development report on how each page can become more efficient from a sustainable development perspective. An Internet Sustainability Grade is calculated for each webpage. While working on Globemallow, I realized that a significant portion of websites had larger load times due to an asinine amount of analytics (tracking) and advertising scripts executing on each…

Facebook's Katran looked too scary (and I don't do C++), so I thought I would investigate using XDP/eBPF to redirect packets at high speed and Go to do the control plane work of health-checking backed servers and managing configuration. With luck the resulting binary should be easy to deploy by non-developers. It's still not mature, but seems to work. Code was written in a very exploratory manner, and I'm not a developer so it is quite shocking at the moment, but I aim to improve it. It is intended to be horizontally scalable with ECMP and has been tested on service providing…

Hi HN, I built Verani, an experimental realtime SDK for Cloudflare Actors (Durable Objects). The goal is to bring a familiar, event-based DX (rooms, emit, channels, lifecycle hooks) to Cloudflare Durable Objects, while handling hibernation correctly. It focuses on - Socket.io-like semantics on top of Durable Objects - Proper Actor hibernation handling (WebSockets survive, state is restored) - Typed API with explicit tradeoffs. It’s early and experimental, but functional. I built it mainly to explore DX and state management patterns on Cloudflare Actors, and I’d love feedback from people…

I built a web page that aggregates data about data center buildup, sovereign fund investments into AI and bottlenecks. The objective is to predict AI race cooldown by looking at a potential decrease of activity involving these elements. The website looks at the quarterly forms from the 5 biggest hyperscalers and adds their CapEx into the mix, calculating a composite index in the end showing how likely it is for the AI race to slow down. Enjoy!

Morning HN - - I have a quick story about building a startup and misreading the market, and an ask. (The ask: Try out our product>> https://app.datable.io/auth/sandbox) My name is Julian Giuca and I was an early employee at New Relic, where I led their Logging product until 2022. It’s safe to say I have opinions about logs. Sometimes I think they are great. Too often I think we can do much better. When people talk to me about logs, they reliably complain about observability costs. Engineering leaders have said it feels “like a protection racket”, where you're forced to…

Full Paper (Zenodo): https://zenodo.org/records/18027729 Help Needed: I am looking for feedback on the experimental setup. The main engineering challenge is maintaining GHZ coherence long enough to isolate the effect from environmental noise. If you have Hi HN. Standard General Relativity posits that time dilation is caused solely by mass-energy. But what happens when information entropy reaches a critical density? I have released Version 2.0 of my paper, proposing the Information-Induced Time Dilation (ITD) hypothesis. The Hypothesis: I propose that local information…

Hi, I help run an academic conference on Nonimaging Optics (optics for optimal energy transfer in solar concentrators or illumination systems). This year, we are hosting a design challenge, and I thought it could be fun for some in the HN crowd to participate. Maybe some of you have ideas for completely different design approaches than what we typically see on the field. The challenge: Design an efficient "solar concentrator" for a sun shaped like the letters "XX" (instead of our regular round sun). The challenge is set up so that the ideal geometry would be 100% efficient*. However, we…

Hey everyone! I'm excited to share my newest side project, Atlas. Atlas is an open-source product analytics tool that sits on top of the data warehouse. You can do things like funnels, flows, and retention analysis that typically you need to pipe data to Mixpanel or Amplitude for. Under the hood, it uses dbt to run queries and is built using TypeScript, React, and NextJS. Check out the live demo at https://atlas-demo.onrender.com/ and let me know if you have questions or thoughts. Happy Atlasing!
