Alternatives

Products that do what Easily compare the costs of newsletter platforms does

I've been writing on Substack for the last year, and from the beginning I've been aware that I might want to migrate to a different platform at some point. I've been looking into the various alternatives to Substack for a while, and always found it difficult to compare costs across the different platforms. There's just too many variables that factor into the cost, and each platform has a slightly different pricing scheme. Spent the last month building Fertit - basically a newsletter manager but you bring your own SMTP and skip the DevOps nightmare. All the features (subscriber management, admin dashboard, custom preferences) without the infrastructure markup. The math that broke me: Mailchimp: $230/month for 15k contacts My solution: $10/month infrastructure + $10 SendGrid = unlimited What I learned: The "enterprise" features are mostly database operations with SMTP APIs. But the 3 weeks of Go/PostgreSQL/Redis setup explains why people just pay ConvertKit $300/month. Here's the thing:…

Hi all! Excited to share rss2newsletter after completing dev work for the initial release. The idea for this project came out of necessity, as I wanted to share my articles via email newsletter. I was looking for a super minimal, lightweight, and open source solution, and when none existed, I decided to create one. For any sizable number of email recipients, a popular platform like Mailchimp will easily cost you hundreds or even thousands per month in per-contact fees. rss2newsletter, on the other hand, allows you to use Amazon SES, so you can reach your audience at pennies on the dollar.…

I've been turning individual Substacks into books -- actual paperbacks and hardbacks that you can put on your shelf -- for a little time now. (See the homepage.) So when a friend pointed me towards a tweet about doing it weekly across all a person's subscriptions, it seemed like a reasonable thing to test. I know where a few of the beartraps on the route from Substack to paper are. Do share feedback and thoughts.
