Hi everyone. I've recently released control-components, a C++ library I've been using for most of my embedded projects. It is written in C++17 (with some features from C++20) and uses STL and FreeRTOS under the hood. It contains a lot of building blocks that is commonly used in embedded and IoT projects: finite state machines (FSM), various counters, synchronisation primitives, system loops, sensors, schedulers, HTTP, WiFi, Web GUI, and much more. It also provides GitHub CI workflows for build automation (ccache, various checks). In general, it's a good starting point for an ESP32 project.…

At Oblong Industries one of the basic building blocks of everything we built was a homegrown C-based IPC system called Plasma. The message channel was an mmap'd file used as a ring buffer. All messages were human-readable, performance was good, configuration was trivial. What was especially useful (and unusual in IPC systems it seems) was the property that message channels outlive all readers and writers, and even survive reboots, because they're just files. For local IPC you don't need a broker or server process. All the engineers who ever worked at Oblong loved Plasma, so I've recreated…

btrc is a statically-typed language that transpiles to C11. It adds classes, generics (monomorphized), type inference, lambdas, f-strings, collections (Vector, Map, Set), threads, GPU compute via WebGPU, ARC memory management, exception handling, and a standard library — while generating strict C11 with no runtime, no GC, and no VM. The compiler is a 6-stage Python pipeline (lexer → parser → analyzer → IR gen → optimizer → C emitter) driven by a formal EBNF grammar and an algebraic AST spec (Zephyr ASDL). The generated C is readable and linkable with any C11 compiler. It ships with a VS Code…

Hi, we’re Simon, Don and Dan, and we’re developing infrastructure for enabling Bluetooth devices that can communicate with your web backend (we’re calling it Blecon). Think your own AirTags network, but for sensors talking to your servers. We’ve got most of the underlying tech for the network infrastructure in place, and now have samples of a first manufacturer device that supports Blecon - a small rechargeable accelerometer tag. Not much live yet, but we put a summary of this first device and how it works in the link (plus you’ll find some early developer docs for the network infrastructure…

Hi HN, I built EEGFrontier, a compact open-source EEG acquisition board based on the ADS1299 and an RP2040. The goal was to design a low-cost board that works with dry electrodes while exposing the full EEG signal chain — no abstractions, no closed firmware. What surprised me most during this project were the practical issues that datasheets don’t really prepare you for: grounding (REF/BIAS), noise coupling from digital lines, routing constraints, and how small layout decisions drastically affect signal quality. The repository includes full KiCad files, firmware, a BOM with cost…

Hi HN: Just released moments ago my project AlwaySyncd.com – A dedicated and encrypted BTSync endpoint. It solves the problem of only being able to synchronize your devices when they are all online. Now you do not have to leave your computer or laptop on 24/7. Sync your laptop with your desktop with your phone with your work computer from anywhere and anytime. All your data is encrypted with 256-AES before you send it to our servers. We can never see your data. http://www.AlwaySyncd.com This is a beta and there are 40 spots available immediately. During the beta we allow you…

I have been working on running BitNet b1.58 inside DRAM by intentionally breaking DDR4 timing rules. Also made a visual explainer: https://pcdeni.github.io/CaSA/explainer/ This is tested and works inside commercial off the shelf memory with custom memory controller in the FPGA. The underlying effect is well characterized in academic papers (cmu safari, simra, dram bender, etc). In the process of getting this to work I also made previously undocumented discovery about DDR behaviour: https://pcdeni.github.io/CaSA/explainer/xor-spread.html…

We built a multi-port USB-C PD3.2 system that treats power delivery as a software-defined problem rather than fixed-function silicon. This started as our internal R&D platform while developing a consumer charger. We were uncomfortable with the typical “the FAE handles the firmware, you just build the hardware” model that dominates the PD ecosystem. In that model, key behavior lives in vendor-controlled binaries, arbitration rules are opaque, and meaningful customization is either discouraged or impossible. We wanted full ownership of the system — from power stage to protocol logic — and we…
