Dear HN, My wife and I both love nature and have always wanted a Pokémon go style app, to collect and learn about different species we find. All the usual species identifying apps were didn’t feel fun enough, so we designed and built one together! Would love for you guys to give it a try and share any thoughts you have.

i wanted to change the habit of reaching for my phone in the morning and doomscrolling away an hour so i built an app to help me. now i have to literally touch grass before accessing my most distracting apps the app is built in swiftui, uses the screen time apis provided by apple and google vision to recognise grass or not i'd love to get your thoughts on the concept.

I've been a bit obsessed with the idea of flipping through the internet a bit like you would a magazine, of undirected browsing as a discovery mechanism, and I think I'm approaching something that's beginning to feel pretty fun. The link at the top will return results out of a pool of approximately 10,000 domains, you can refresh to get new ones. You can also explore in a directed fashion by using the 'Similar Domains'-buttons. These are not random. A sampler, beyond the random sites offered with the head link https://search.marginalia.nu/explore/www.amiga-news.de…

The Australian Acoustic Observatory (https://acousticobservatory.org/) has 360 microphones across the continent, and over 2 million hours of audio. However, none of it is labeled: We want to make this enormous repository useful to researchers. We have found that researchers are often looking for 'hard' signals - specific call-types, birds with very little available training data, and so on. So we built an acoustic-similarity search tool, allowing researchers to provide an example of what they're looking for, which we then match against embeddings from the A2O dataset. Here's…
