24 alternatives to Git Pushups
Hi HN! I made this app out of necessity: sometimes I'll troll over my laptop all day without moving until lunch break or work is done. No good. So I made git hook to block my git commits if I didn't do some calisthenics. Later, after I noticed it was useful, I decided to open it up for others. It works like this: - Download the iOS or Android app - Install the .git hook - Do daily pushups with the app or else your hooks will fail Pushup form is validated via ARKit/MLKit and the accelerometer and I only use github for authentication. If you find it useful, let me know! Justin

Last year I gave in to the temptation of doing my own startup and quit my job, just like many others have done on this site. Since then, I’ve severely changed my lifestyle and reduced my living costs to a crazy low figure and worked my ass off for the last 8 months to achieve this: www.openloopz.com I have written more about it on Medium here: http://goo.gl/JN03yf I knew from the start the odds were stacked against me. I’m almost 36, I have a family and I live in the North East of England where - without wanting to sound negative - the opportunities are few and far between…

I built an app where you LITERALLY have to do push-ups to use Reddit (or whatever app). My guy, this is the summer you get SWOLE! Build a massive chest instead of doomscrolling on Hackernews. Also, it's FREE. You can set it on a schedule. You can set it on a time limit. You can set it after X opens. Or even after you come home from work. The apps will remain blocked until you do your push-ups! The app is built natively on SwiftUI. I use Apple's native Vision API to detect body parts and joints. I use Apple's Screen Time API for app blocking. I don't know what else to say so go on now and get…

I am a software developer and in the last few months after recently becoming a father I was barely finding time for a proper workout. Recently I was reading about new research on Snack Exercises and how beneficial mini workouts of less than 2mins every so often, during the day are to our body. So, I decided to build an iOS App for me and others to help with this. The app generates a list of exercises that I need to tick to complete daily or loose my streak. The algorithm takes into account muscle groups and balancing the exercises to hit most main muscles. I also stayed going through all…

Hi HN, I realized I track code every day, but ignore my health. So I built GitBalance, log workouts like commits, and see them as a contribution graph. You can even do it via CLI: gitbalance commit -m "30 min workout" gitbalance commit -m "stretch + wrist recovery" Super early MVP — curious if this resonates.

Hi everybody, I personally found the best way to motivate yourself to program everyday is by creating a practice repo and by uploading anything you code up that day into this repo. This is a great way to stay consistent seeing the bright green light up every time you push your code. It's very addicting and satisfying, and has definitely made me a better programmer over the past few months.

Hey HN I built Caccepted - A local-first challenge tracker that helps you stay consistent with goals, habits, workouts, and projects. - Everything runs in your browser, works offline, and doesn’t require creating an account. Why Most trackers feel bloated. I wanted something simple: a single place to manage 30-day challenges, weekly plans, and personal projects. All visible in one daily dashboard. I kept failing at building in public for the same reason every time: not fear of judgment, just the blank page after a long day of shipping. Something always happened. But converting "refactored auth flow" or "fixed that edge case that's been annoying me for a week" into something worth posting felt like a second job on top of the actual job. So I'd skip it. Then skip it again. Then stop entirely. The approach: connect your GitHub, it pulls recent commits and repo activity, and generates draft posts for multiple platforms in your tone — raw founder voice, not content creator polish. The idea…

I've been trying to figure out how long feature development takes, for years. I'm not a fan of (a priori) estimations of work, which just seem like the wrong measure. I think I've got a better way. Genuinely interested if some git gurus can improve this. Particularly around the pre-push hook, which is dependent on retained squash commit text. Or if there's an entirely better way to achieve the same thing.

ShadowGit▲20Hey HN, I built ShadowGit a while back to automatically commit code every minute to a hidden git repo (.shadowgit.git). Original goal was to easily rollback when AI tools break things. But I discovered something interesting: this minute-by-minute history is perfect context for AI assistants. So I built an MCP server that lets Claude/Cursor query this history using native git commands. The results surprised me: Before: Claude would read my entire codebase repeatedly, burning 15,000+ tokens to debug issues. After: Claude runs `git log --grep="drag"` finds when drag-and-drop worked,…

no-mistakes is how I kill AI slop. It puts a local git proxy in front of my real remote. I push to no-mistakes instead of origin, and it spins up a disposable worktree, runs my coding agent as a validation pipeline, forwards upstream only after every check passes, opens a clean PR automatically, and babysits CI pipeline for me.
