24 alternatives to Git Walkthrough – Tool to explore repos from commit #1
Built this because I kept getting lost trying to understand how codebases evolved. git-walkthrough lets you navigate through commits with arrow keys and view diffs between them as uncommitted changes in VS Code. Just run npx git-walkthrough in any repo and step through the commit history. Press 'd' to toggle diff mode, and it shows you what changed between commits right in your editor. Handy for: * Understanding how an unfamiliar codebase evolved * Code reviews where you want to step through changes * Learning from open source projects Auto-restores your git state when you quit so nothing…

GitPodcast▲308Understanding any GitHub repository is tough, especially a big one - this project aims to make it a tad bit easier by giving the listener a primer + some details on the specific repository. For some people (like me) - audio/visual medium is more easily understandable. So, I hope this project is helpful to some of them. This project was inspired by https://gitdiagram.com - so check it out as well, and maybe use them together for better understanding. Future plans: 1. To add more voices and let users choose most natural one (decide between OpenAI/Microsoft Speech) 2. Custom…

What works now: user signups, org creations, private/public repos, and importing GitHub repositories (both as read-only mirrors and full migrations). So basically, you can create, push and pull to a repo, but we don't have many features quite yet (issues, PRs, CI). What is a bit unique is: 1) we built it in Rust and 2) the website is a little odd. Its design is inspired by CLIs (e.g., fzf, broot, vim) instead of web apps, and as such, lacks some affordances that you might typically expect in favor of keyboard-driven instant navigations (we have the very ambitious goal of an FCP of…

GitQuest▲187Hey HN, I built Git Quest, it reads your public GitHub history and turns it into an idle RPG character. How it works: - Your most-used language determines your class (TypeScript → Paladin, Python → Sage, etc.) - Commits generate Power and XP - Your character auto-battles dungeons while you code – no active play needed - Enemies drop loot across 5 rarity tiers - Live leaderboard ranks developers It only reads public GitHub data. I built it because I wanted something that rewards coding consistency without being another "streak" tracker. The idle mechanic means prolific coders naturally…

Gitlogue is a CLI that turns your Git commits into a typing-style replay. It visualizes diffs line by line, shows the file tree, and plays back each edit as if it were typed in real time. Key points • Realistic typing animation • Syntax-highlighted diffs • File-tree view • Replay any commit • Self-contained CLI Demo video is in the README. Hello friends, Today I'm sharing a little tool to help you explore GitHub repositories: • https://diggit.dev This project was admittedly a big dumb excuse to play with Elm and Claude Code. I published my design notes and all the chat transcripts here: • https://taylor.town/diggit-000 Please add bug reports and feature requests to the repo: • https://github.com/surprisetalk/diggit Enjoy!

I use interactive rebase quite often, and particularly like the editor bundled with IntelliJ. But I do not always work with IntelliJ, and am not 'fluent' with Vim, so I tried to replicate roughly the same rebase experience within a TUI. I used a small TUI OCaml project i made last year. The notable features are: - Move commits up and down, fixup, drop - Rename commits from the editor (without having to stop for a reword during the rebase run) - Visualize modified files along commits - 'Explode' a commit ,creating a commit for each modified file (a thing I found myself doing quite often)…

JSON Query▲152On a recent screen share with our designer at my FT job, I watched as our designer struggled with checking out a repository. It was painful because existing Git clients are confusing and nearly user hostile. Us software engineers are used to Git and terrible UX, but it shouldn't have to be that way. So, I wanted to make something better. Been working on this one for a while now, and while it's still very early stages, it's stable enough that I feel comfortable sharing it with the world :) I wanted a few things to be really easy and clear: - Merging between branches is explained before you do…

I built a tool which you can use to visualise your git commits at an org or repository level. It shows just how much work an engineering team, or even an individual does, that often goes unseen by non-dev teams. You can read about the build here: https://ably.com/blog/visualize-your-commits-in-realtime-wit... Repo is here: https://github.com/ably-labs/github-commit-visualizer You can deploy your own to netlify (or provider of your choice) and start visualising your own project's commits in realtime.

I've found it helps PR reviewers when they can look through a set of commits with clear messages and logically organized changes. Typically reviewers prefer a larger quantity of smaller changes versus a smaller quantity of larger changes. Sometimes it gets really messy to break up a change into sufficiently small PRs, so thoughtful commits are a great way of further subdividing changes in PRs. It can be pretty time consuming to do this though, so this tool automates the process with the help of AI. The tool sends the diff of your git branch against a base branch to an LLM provider. The LLM…

Hey HN, I built a VS Code extension that lets you do Git things without memorizing Git commands. You know what you want to do, move this commit over there, undo that thing you just did, split this big commit into two smaller ones. Git Navigator lets you just... do that. Drag a commit to rebase it. Cherry-pick (copy) it onto another branch. Click to stage specific lines. The visual canvas shows you what's happening, so you're not guessing what `git rebase -i HEAD~3` actually means. The inspiration was Sapling's Interactive Smartlog, which I used heavily at Meta. I wanted that same experience…
