Dismantling the monopoly on top-level domains
Handshake is a decentralized system for managing top-level domains that replaces ICANN's current control. Instead of the traditional monopoly on domains like .com and .org, Handshake distributes TLDs through… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. For the past 5 years or so I've been working on a ground-up redesign of Freenet, my peer-to-peer project from the early 2000s (now renamed Hyphanet). The new Freenet has been up and running since December along with some early applications like River[1], our decentralized group chat and Delta - a decentralized CMS. Users have already started to build their own apps on Freenet including games, and we have some interesting apps in development like Atlas, a search/recommendation engine. Architecturally, this new Freenet is a global, decentralized key-value store where keys are webassembly…

Very opportunistic toy project as I saw the domain was up for grabs: 'at.hn' is a little site where people can have their own subdomains for whatever their HN username is (opt-in only by adding a slug to your bio). It doesn't really do much. Just shows your HN bio rendered as markdown plus meta stuff. I'm thinking of adding an aggregated user listing on the homepage so people can explore profiles. There's a bunch of interesting people on HN but discoverability is a bit longwinded. I'm wondering what other features people want. Otherwise shall likely leave it as-is. I remember hnbadges was a…

Local development with .local domains and HTTPSfree tier, from $8/mo▲84Hi HN! I'm Jarek, and I've built this tool that allows publishing .local domains on the local network using mDNS. It also has a reverse proxy that handles HTTPS termination and port forwarding. I'm working on adding more features, like an index page with all available domains or allowing proxy redirects, so you could redirect from HTTP to HTTPS. Let me know if you have any questions or feedback!

My company launched a new open source web browser built on Chromium. It supports decentralized domains on Handshake and is the first browser to support .eth DNS. It is also the first browser to support secure web browsing with DANE. Check it out: https://impervious.com/beacon https://github.com/imperviousinc/beacon

Hey HN! We’re Thomas and Andrew, and we just built a Dutch auction exchange for cloud H100 rentals. It’s live at https://www.H100cloud.com. Auctions traditionally start at a base price and work their way up. That doesn’t work for cloud computing — would you ever want to be outbid and lose your data? Our Dutch auction model starts at a ceiling — $3.50/hr per H100. We lower prices every six hours until servers are picked up by buyers. We stop lowering them when prices reach a $2.20 floor. When you rent a server, the price is locked until you delete the server. You’ll never get…
