I've been trying to figure out how long feature development takes, for years. I'm not a fan of (a priori) estimations of work, which just seem like the wrong measure. I think I've got a better way. Genuinely interested if some git gurus can improve this. Particularly around the pre-push hook, which is dependent on retained squash commit text. Or if there's an entirely better way to achieve the same thing.

Hello HN! I got pretty overwhelmed with Notion, Trello, etc. (Even though they are great tools!) as an indie dev, so I built an app that is simpler to use and perfectly suited for an indie like me :) You can basically divide your projects into multiple milestones (a milestone could be e.g. a new version), and the milestones can have multiple tasks that are either todo, in progress, or done. The progress for each milestone is calculated with those tasks, and you can also prioritize and categorize the tasks using tags (E.g. for me, #ph turns into "High Priority", and #pm into "Medium…

Hi HN, I built Build4Me to address a trust problem in diaspora-funded construction projects. Many families send money home to build houses but have no reliable way to verify that work is actually being done. Photos can be reused, progress exaggerated, or projects abandoned after funds are sent. Build4Me introduces milestone-based funding where each construction milestone must be verified before funds are released. The system verifies progress using: - geotagged photo capture - GPS location verification - AI image analysis - duplicate image detection It runs on serverless AWS architecture…

Hi there! I made this tool called Finish UP to help me do exactly that with my personal projects and work tasks. I found that I had a few problems that cross-cut the majority of my projects: 1. I have loads of new ideas for projects, or tasks to do like learning German, but I do not always know where to start 2. I open a kanban board and then do not know what type of tasks to start with, how detailed they should be, or to what extent they can overlap 3. I started using ChatGPT and equivalents to help me ideate and put in place initial plans, but as soon as I asked questions about certain…

I built a free, no login tool that calculates and shows the current year as a progress bar with continuously updating percentage, and 3 other visualization models. It has a customization feature where you can track any time period up to 100 years as a progress bar, and a lifespan feature where you input your birthday and sex. It handles leap years, time zones, and runs automated weekly snapshots via GitHub Actions + Puppeteer and posts on X. Would love feedback on the model or edge cases I might have missed.
