Products that do what I Built a Tool to Break Free from YouTube's Addictive Algorithm does
I built Watchlist to solve a problem that's been nagging at me (and I suspect many others): YouTube's addictive nature and its impact on productivity. The Problem: YouTube is an incredible source of knowledge, but its homepage is an unending scroll of rabbit holes. The algorithm is designed to maximize watch time, often at the expense of our intentions and productivity. I found myself wasting hours, jumping from video to video, and then blaming myself for the lack of self-control. The Solution: Watchlist! Watchlist is essentially YouTube playlists on steroids. Here's how it works: 1. Create…

I created this chrome extension for myself where I track my own behavior locally and recommend myself content from platforms I want content from (youtube/twitter/quora/etc) in a feed. I made it public just in case anyone else was interested. I would rather have control over my own algorithm and own the data. Also, it gives me flexibility. Turns out I do like these feeds just not when I don't own it haha. Let me know what you think of my implementation?

Hey HN, I've been working on this side project for the past month. It generates a step-by-step tutorial guide for YouTube videos that you can follow along without watching long videos. Best suited for tutorial videos but can work for other videos aswell. No BS. Just straight to the point. The guides are generated from pure transcript so you don't have to worry about it being AI. It's my first project as a total beginner. Something I had to do inorder to get out of tutorial hell. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or if you face any problems or bugs. I would try to fix them to the…

I built Yourabbit.com — a site that curates hand-picked YouTube rabbit holes grouped by themes like quirky psychology, obscure tech, weird facts, and binge-worthy oddities. It’s not driven by the YouTube algorithm — every collection is themed and curated manually (for now), with a backend I’m automating to fetch and organize new rabbit holes daily. Built as a hybrid Astro + Next.js project, optimized for static generation and speed. I’m also pairing videos with custom summaries and commentary (using AI), and would love feedback from the HN crowd on: Content model (too wide? not specific…

Hi HN, I recently noticed a recurring visual artifact in the "Most Replayed" heatmap on the YouTube player. The highest peaks were always surrounded by two dips. I got curious about why they were there, so I decided to reverse engineer the feature to find out. This post documents the deep dive. It starts with a system design recreation, reverse engineering the rendering code, and ends with the mathematics. This is also my first attempt at writing an interactive article. I would love to hear your thoughts on the investigation and the format.

Hi HN! I built SkipCut it’s like an ad-free, distraction-free YouTube with useful extras: background play, SponsorBlock, dark mode, playlist support, local history, download/share buttons… and it works on any device. No install. No login. Here’s the best part: It works just by replacing "youtube" with "skipcut" in the video link. You skip all the boring stuff — ads, sponsors, intros, silence, filler and just watch what matters. Why it’s different: No comments. No suggested videos. No clickbait. I made this for my kid, I create a playlist and just send a SkipCut link like:…

NoSuggest is a quiet act of resistance against YouTube algorithms always trying to pull you into a loop of unlimited videos in turn into unlimited screen time. With unending side cards of videos, auto-play, what's next suggestions, YouTube shorts and notifications, users will be doom scrolling for many hours in a day. I faced the same problem. Acknowledging that, not all content in YouTube is bad. There are educational videos, genuine news contents without political bias which is very hard to find outside YouTube and many other good relaxing, entertainment stuff. NoSuggest lets you only…

Hi all, I'm an indie hacker and I've been working on watchlimits.com over last couple months. It's a chrome extension that helps you set limits (greatly customizable) and provides you stats and various accountability features. It only runs on the video streaming platforms (not everywhere) and it's privacy centric. Almost all functionality is available for free, but some advanced features only available in the paid version (password protection, allowed youtube channels). It's a pretty niche tool that originated from my own occasional struggles (lost sleep anyone?), even though many people…

Briefly, what the app does: 1. Points to a reverse playlist(an actual youtube playlist) for a channel. 2. Ability to skip to a position in playlist from beginning. 3. Request any new channel you would like to have a reverse playlist for ! Usage eg: - Using the above you can skip to say 100th video from begining in a channel (e.g CaseeyNeistat Vlog) and keep watching on youtube app (without going back to bingethetube.com). - Come back next day and resume watching from say video 120 without a lot of scrolling Useful if you like to follow a creators youtube journey or old Vlogs !

I'm a solo dev. A few years ago, I got addicted to Reddit. Spent months in that loop. Being a programmer, I thought I'd be clever. Redirected Reddit's domain to nowhere in my DNS file. Worked great until I'd just... open the file and undo it 20 minutes later. So I made it irreversible. Locked the DNS file so it can't be edited unless I boot my Mac in safe mode. And if I do that, there's a script that instantly locks it again. Haven't used Reddit since last year. Problem solved, right? Wrong. I just replaced Reddit with Twitch and YouTube. Started keeping streams running in the background…

Hey folks! My weekend project, Summify.io, has officially launched! It's an AI-driven tool that simplifies your life by summarizing YouTube videos in just a single click. Now, you can get the gist of those long vids without breaking a sweat! Built from the ground up as a solo developer, it's been an incredible journey full of late nights, countless coffees, and the spirit of indie hacking The amazing response from our private release has motivated me on to start building even more features. Can't wait for you to check it out and share your thoughts! Try Summify.io now and let's me know what…
