24 alternatives to I extracted BASIC listings for Tim Hartnell's 1986 book
Tim Hartnell was one of the most prolific authors during the early days of the home computing boom, writing many popular books covering genres of games on different platforms and, in this case, artificial intelligence. I've extracted the BASIC program listings from Hartnell's 1986 book 'Exploring Artificial Intelligence on Your IBM PC' and organized them along with a PC-BASIC runtime environment and instructions so you can try these programs out yourself. Even though the AI landscape has changed enormously since Hartnell first wrote this book, I hope one or two of you will get some value out…
This is a collection of BASIC program listings extracted from Tim Hartnell's 1986 book on artificial intelligence for IBM PCs. It includes a PC-BASIC runtime environment and instructions to run the historical programs.… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes.

The book page links to a blog post that explains how I got about it (and has a link to sample content), but the TL&DR is that I could not find a lot of books that were on "our" history _and_ were larded with technical details. So I set about writing one, and some five years later I'm happy to share the result. I think it's one of the few "computer history" books that has tons of code, but correct me if I'm wrong (I wrote this both to tell a story and to learn :-)). My favorite languages are Smalltalk and Lisp, but as an Emacs user, I've been using the latter for much longer and for my…

Hey HN! I've been curious about the history of computer science and decided to try to read Turing's 1936 paper where he conceptualizes the Turing Machine, etc. I had trouble understanding the paper, read The Annotated Turing by Charles Petzold (which is wonderful), but felt that reading a reference implementation would help formalize my understanding. When I couldn't find an open source implementation, I decided to write my own. The implementation includes: - Abbreviated tables (m-functions) - Conversions to Standard Descriptions and Description Numbers - A working universal machine - A…

I've been exploring the (not so=) amazing potential of AI in coding and have compiled a list of tools. From AI-powered IDEs to code generators, this resource is my contribution to the community. I'm still on the fence about including txt2sql projects, as their functionality seems too basic to me. And I'm personally maintaining this, so your feedback is wellcome.

I started writing this book 10 years ago in JavaScript, got through a few chapters (asymptotic notation, basic techniques, start of sorting), and then abandoned it. Recently I picked it back up, converted everything to TypeScript, and used AI (Zenflow [1] + Claude Opus 4.6) to complete the remaining chapters. I provided the structure, direction, and initial chapters; the AI generated the bulk of the remaining content under a spec-driven workflow. The book covers roughly a first 1-2 year CS curriculum: sorting, dynamic programming, graph algorithms, trees, heaps, hash tables, and more. All…

Hey HN, I don’t know who else has the same issue, but: Textbooks often bury good ideas in dense notation, skip the intuition, assume you already know half the material, and get outdated in fast-moving fields like AI. Over the past 7 years of my AI/ML experience, I filled notebooks with intuition-first, real-world context, no hand-waving explanations of maths, computing and AI concepts. In 2024, a few friends used these notes to prep for interviews at DeepMind, OpenAI, Nvidia etc. They all got in and currently perform well in their roles. So I'm sharing. This is an open & unconventional…

Hey HN, I'm an author and I spent 2+ years writing my first book and getting it published. After my experience, I realized that 99% of all business books follow the same structure. So, with the rise of AI solutions, we asked ourselves if we could simplify the process to help first-time authors achieve their dream of writing and publishing a book. Together with a friend, we created First Book ai. Now, we can create coherent, full-size books in hours, saving first-time authors years in the process. We hope this tool will be helpful for as many upcoming authors as possible. Would love your…

Hello Hacker News! We're Yangqing, Xiang and JJ from lepton.ai. We are building a platform to run any AI models as easy as writing local code, and to get your favorite models in minutes. It's like container for AI, but without the hassle of actually building a docker image. We built and contributed to some of the world's most popular AI software - PyTorch 1.0, ONNX, Caffe, etcd, Kubernetes, etc. We also managed hundreds of thousands of computers in our previous jobs. And we found that the AI software stack is usually unnecessarily complex - and we want to change that. Imagine if you are a…

Our initial intention was to experiment with a smartbook idea, but we couldn't find a good prototyping tool for small/specialized AI models. That rabbit hole took us through vector databases, through infra for small AI, and finally here. We’re particularly proud of the accessibility/simplicity of our code syntax. Krixik’s model library is limited to eleven model types (modules) and a few dozen models, but we will significantly expand it. Other enhancements, like a local client and several 3rd-party integrations, are also planned. You require API credentials to try Krixik. You can…

A little game I made to show off an old project. The functionality of the CPU is derived entirely from simulated logic gates. All the operations and control flow are based on the underlying properties of the logic gates, and changing their operation leads to corresponding changes in function. The original game code is all python and it runs in the browser using wasm/pyodide. Not very mobile friendly
