24 alternatives to I'm 17, built a face-verified social network to fight fake accounts
Hi HN, I’m Arun, 17, from India. While my friends scroll Instagram and Snapchat, I’ve been obsessed with building something different. I don’t want a regular job — I want to push technology. So I built WhiteLotus — a social app where every account is face-verified. No bots, no fake profiles, no spam. Just real people. Core ideas: AI-powered face verification (1 account per person) 1-on-1 private chats (only with friends) Photo-based posting (keep it visual, keep it real) “Kingdoms” (Fire, Water, Earth, Air tribes) for community vibes Leveling system that shows how active and trustworthy you…

Before the pandemic, my tiny startup was doing quite well selling Edge AI systems, based on our own lightweight AI inference engine, with object detection and face recognition for smart city and smart retail & food service applications. When the real world shut down, there was suddenly nothing to monitor on streets and in restaurants, so I set out to try and evolve our real time face recognition system into a video codec for high quality face-to-face online interactions, as I was not satisfied with the quality of Zoom and friends. I got it to work, and the first release for IOS was just…

Hello, There are many services that return fake avatar images, but it can be hard to get consistent names and faces. In this service ChatGPT was used to generate a list of users with various characteristics and Dall-E to generate their avatars, based on those. You can get a random avatar image like so: https://avatars.tzador.com/face Or request a specific size, like so: https://avatars.tzador.com/face?size=250 You can ask for specific gender, like so: https://avatars.tzador.com/face?gender=female Also you can pin point with id param to get back…

This is something fun I’ve been hacking on recently: ridiculously simple group chat. Go to http://faces.io and then get your friends to do the same. That’s it! :-D Currently works best in Chrome. It’s definitely beta status at best. Audio can get weird—be ready to mute. ;-) Let me know what you think!

Hey there, First time posting on Hacker News in about 2 years! The reason I’m posting is that I thought I’d write about the product I’ve been building, in hopes it resonates with people. Why build yet another social app? Because I deleted almost all social media around 3/4 years ago as it was just net negative on my life. There was very little that was truly interesting, I didn’t care about looking good to other people and because of the ‘media’ and ads, the apps were all designed to make me spend too much time for what I was getting. I hated it and what it meant for people’s behaviour,…

Hey HN, I've been a long time HN reader and here is my first contribution. Hoodsup.me is a chat-based matchmaking app built on top of your Facebook social graph. It matchmakes you with people who are geographically close to you and with whom you share common points. You can optionally activate your webcam to talk face-to-face with your partner. Think of it as a Sonar meets a genital-free Chatroulette. I would love to get some feedback. It's only optimized for WebKit for now. No signup is required so just stop by and say hi! :) Clickable link: <a…

Hi HN, I’m Billy, co-founder of ChatterBooth. It’s an anonymous app where people can talk or chat freely without judgment. The idea came in 2020 when one of my co-founders wanted to share about his mom’s cancer recovery but couldn’t. It made us realize how hard it is to open up online. Finally, we released the app earlier this year. We’ve also noticed people venting to AI chatbots just to be heard, but AI doesn’t really get you. ChatterBooth is for real human connection, even if it’s anonymous. In the future, if there’s enough traction, we want to reward people as Conversation Starters or…
