I'm 17, built a face-verified social network to fight fake accounts

Hi HN, I’m Arun, 17, from India. While my friends scroll Instagram and Snapchat, I’ve been obsessed with building something different. I don’t want a regular job — I want to push technology. So I built WhiteLotus — a social app where every account is face-verified. No bots, no fake profiles, no spam. Just real people. Core ideas: AI-powered face verification (1 account per person) 1-on-1 private chats (only with friends) Photo-based posting (keep it visual, keep it real) “Kingdoms” (Fire, Water, Earth, Air tribes) for community vibes Leveling system that shows how active and trustworthy you…

In plain words

WhiteLotus is a social networking app that uses AI-powered face verification to ensure every account belongs to one real person, eliminating fake profiles and bots. The platform offers private one-on-one chats between friends, photo-based posting, and community features organized into four "Kingdoms." It includes a leveling system and TrustNotes where friends can vouch for each other. The app is designed for users seeking a genuine social experience without spam or impersonation.

In the maker’s words, at launch

Hi HN, I’m Arun, 17, from India. While my friends scroll Instagram and Snapchat, I’ve been obsessed with building something different. I don’t want a regular job — I want to push technology. So I built WhiteLotus — a social app where every account is face-verified. No bots, no fake profiles, no spam. Just real people. Core ideas: AI-powered face verification (1 account per person) 1-on-1 private chats (only with friends) Photo-based posting (keep it visual, keep it real) “Kingdoms” (Fire, Water, Earth, Air tribes) for community vibes Leveling system that shows how active and trustworthy you are “TrustNotes” where friends can write notes about you Right now, it has ~44 users. Growth is… hard. I’m shipping alone in Flutter + Django, fixing bugs, and trying to figure out how to get beyond 1 new user a day. I know Instagram and Snapchat are addictive giants — but I believe there’s space for something real. A place where you don’t worry if the profile DMing you is fake. I’d love feedback from this community: Does this solve a real problem? What would make you switch or at least try it? How should I think about growth as a solo indie? Even if nobody uses it, this journey has taught me more than any job ever could. But I’d love to hear your thoughts. I turned my face rec system into a video codec2022 · vertigo.ai · ▲518

Before the pandemic, my tiny startup was doing quite well selling Edge AI systems, based on our own lightweight AI inference engine, with object detection and face recognition for smart city and smart retail & food service applications. When the real world shut down, there was suddenly nothing to monitor on streets and in restaurants, so I set out to try and evolve our real time face recognition system into a video codec for high quality face-to-face online interactions, as I was not satisfied with the quality of Zoom and friends. I got it to work, and the first release for IOS was just…

What do you think of my new social app?2022 · oncircles.com · ▲76

Hey there, First time posting on Hacker News in about 2 years! The reason I’m posting is that I thought I’d write about the product I’ve been building, in hopes it resonates with people. Why build yet another social app? Because I deleted almost all social media around 3/4 years ago as it was just net negative on my life. There was very little that was truly interesting, I didn’t care about looking good to other people and because of the ‘media’ and ads, the apps were all designed to make me spend too much time for what I was getting. I hated it and what it meant for people’s behaviour,…

  • I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.

  • Hey HN, Henry from Cactus here! We previously released Cactus Needle, a 14MB agentic LLM for tool call, device use, and structured extraction for phones, wearables, smart homes, small robots and microcontrollers. We got really great feedback here, and have now incorporated the suggestions to release Needle 2. The whole model is a single 14MB binary that runs a full session in 28MB of RAM; 45m parameters at 2bit compression. Needle hits 500 tokens/sec decode speed on a Raspberry Pi 5, sits between 400-1,500 tokens/sec on VR devices like Meta Quest 3S and Apple Vision Pro, and ranges…

I made a built-from scratch Wayland Compositor to display any GUI app* in the terminal! I think there is a lot of unexplored potential in custom Wayland compositors, a lot of really cool things you can embed existing applications into! So, I started with embedding apps into the terminal because that is the easiest input/output (output is just utf-8 and I use the great `chafa` library for that, and I just read from stdin for the input). If you have any other ideas for cool Wayland compositors, let me know. I purposedly wrote 80% the app in Typescript to appeal to the most developers and…

Years ago I stumbled across a basic version of this concept and it stuck with me. I knew if I was ever going to take on such a project, it would need to be flawless, but without coding experience it was just another idea that would never happen. By the end of 2024, as AI coding tools exploded everywhere, I finally had a way to make it real. I started from zero knowledge and spent months collaborating with AI agents as a learning experience. Every pixel and every function went through me. The AI translated what I asked for into code, but every decision was human. I didn't use existing OS…
