We have pegboards and plywood all over our apartment, and I had an idea to make a tiny pegboard for my kid, Oli. So I naturally cut the wood, drilled in the holes, sat down at the computer to open Fusion 360 and spend an hour or two drawing the pieces by hand. Then I looked at the rough sketch Oli and I had made together, took a photo of it, pasted it into Codex, and gave it just two dimensions: the holes are 40mm apart and the pegs are 8mm wide. Hey HN, I want to share a personal project: I made a tiny pen-plotted book for my wife. I did everything myself—drawings (with some help from Midjourney), plotting, cutting, and binding. I even used a 3D printer to make a helper tool. It's absolutely over-engineered, but I enjoyed it a lot. Multi-disciplinary projects, especially those with a physical output, are a lot of fun for me. I have been dreaming of creating things (arts, games, etc.), but that wouldn't be possible because I can hardly draw anything. But now with Stable Diffusion everything is hopeful again, so I further collected the AI magics that I considered necessary in creation activities, and integrated them into an Infinite draw board (like Figma). I'm enthralled with using pen plotters to make generative art. Last August at SIGGRAPH, I built an interactive experience for others to see how code can be used to make visual art. The linked blog post is my trials and tribulations of linking a MIDI controller to one of these algorithms and sending its output to a plotter, so that people may witness the end-to-end experience.

3D printing is such a fascinating field of technology, so a couple months ago, I decided to take a deep dive and learn how they actually work! Hi HN! We're working on an AI studio product, and have been experimenting with the recently-released ControlNet (https://github.com/lllyasviel/ControlNet) After wasting hours with it, we decided to put together a quick fun project. "Sketch" allows you to draw anything (works w/ touch inputs on mobile too), enter a prompt (it can be as simple as "drawing" and it'll try to guess) and you get something out fast. Keeping it all on a public feed as well, to serve as inspiration. Hope anyone here finds it fun :-)

Hey together with wife we took part in AssemblyAI hackathon and although we didn't win we felt good enough about our inital MVP that we took it a bit further. You can describe your characters and give a title and however long/detailed description you want, the gpt-3 will generate a children's story from it, dall-e will generate images. Images are postprocessed with stable-diffusion custom model (for stylisation) and that's the final result. It's still early as it was done in about 2 weeks, but I count on your feedback. I've noticed all 3D AI generators create monlithic blobs that are impossible to edit. So, alongwith a friend, I built this project where you can generate 3D objects with separate, editable parts. I'm looking for community feedback. The tool is free, but you'll have to BYOK. It uses models like Gemini, Claude or chatGPT to generate a Blender construction script. Basically the output is not merely geometry. It's the procedure that built it, plus the asset itself. This means you can actually go in and edit the "kit of parts" afterwards, instead of starting over.
