I made a tiny book using a pen-plotter and AI

Hey HN, I want to share a personal project: I made a tiny pen-plotted book for my wife. I did everything myself—drawings (with some help from Midjourney), plotting, cutting, and binding. I even used a 3D printer to make a helper tool. It's absolutely over-engineered, but I enjoyed it a lot. Multi-disciplinary projects, especially those with a physical output, are a lot of fun for me. The post covers the process in detail, but if you're interested in anything specific, let me know. Cheers!

In plain words

A creator combined pen-plotting, AI-generated art, and 3D printing to produce a handmade miniature book as a personal gift. Using Midjourney for artwork generation, a pen-plotter for drawing, and custom 3D-printed tools for assembly, the project demonstrates integration of multiple digital fabrication techniques. The project documentation details the entire process from design through binding, appealing to makers interested in combining software, hardware, and traditional bookbinding crafts.

I created a tiny, hand-crafted book for my wife, using AI, a pen plotter and 3D printer. Here's how I over-engineered a simple gift into a full blown passion project.

If you are interested in how I over-engineered the process of making a tiny book for my wife, using AI, a pen plotter, a 3D printer, and a lot of time, you are in the right place. The book is titled The Tiny Book of Great Joys Mala Knjiga Velikih Radosti in Serbian , and here is how it turned out: My wife is delighted with it, so it was worth all the effort. This post will take you through the process. It will be a long one, but please stick around - I promise there will be a lot of pretty pictures. I had this idea for a while after seeing something similar somewhere on the internet.. Since then, I always wanted to make one for my wife - a physically small book with a bunch of small…from muffinman.io

I was at FB/Meta from late 2013 to early 2023, mostly working in the compiler/runtime spaces. I got hit in the spring 2023 layoff wave. I immediately started making games in my newfound free time (a lifelong interest, and I even worked in AA(A?) back ca. ~2000), and in October 2023 I stumbled upon the idea of a roguelike pachinko/plinko game inspired by Luck Be A Landlord. Things snowballed quickly, I started talking to publishers, then worked like crazy through all of 2024, almost the hardest I've ever worked in my career, and launched the game in December 2024. It's sold…
